Note. In Renault car engines, unlike the engines of most other car brands, the cylinders are counted from the flywheel, and not from the crankshaft pulley.
Set TDC according to the mark on the camshaft pulley (when installed according to the marks on the crankshaft pulley, the piston of either the 1st or 4th cylinder can be in this position). After that, be sure to check that the marks on the crankshaft toothed pulley match (with accessory drive pulley removed). If the marks on the crankshaft pulley do not match, then the valve timing is incorrect (1st cylinder piston not set to TDC). In this case, it is necessary to remove the camshaft drive belt and turn the crankshaft until the marks are aligned.
Note. The crankshaft is rotated to check the coincidence of the marks for the bolt securing the auxiliary drive pulley to it, removing the upper part of the right engine mudguard to access it. In addition, you can do it in the following ways (especially when adjusting the clearances in the valve drive, when control by marks on the crankshaft pulley is not needed):
- 1) turn on any gear (better than the fourth) and slowly drive the car until the marks are aligned;
- 2) turn on any gear and hang out one of the front wheels, then turn the hanging wheel until the marks are aligned.
The mark on the camshaft sprocket must be aligned with the mark on the cylinder head cover, made in the form of a logo «Dacia»...
Note. In addition to the marks on the pulleys, the timing belt is painted with paint marks a, which, when installing the valve timing, must also be aligned with the marks on the pulleys.
... and the mark on the crankshaft sprocket must be aligned with the mark on the cylinder block. It becomes visible after removing the accessory drive pulley. Risk and round ledge on the toothed pulley must match the hole on the cylinder block.
You will need socket wrenches (heads) «on 10» and «at 18».
1. Remove the right front wheel.
Attention! Loosen the wheel bolts only when the vehicle is on the ground. If you are working on a pit or overpass, place chocks under the wheels, brake the vehicle with the parking brake and place the front of the vehicle on a secure footing.
2. Remove the upper part of the right engine mudguard (see «Removal and installation of mudguards and engine crankcase protection»).
3. Remove the accessory drive belt (see «Replacing accessory drive belts»).
4. Remove the right suspension bracket of the power unit (see «Replacement of the right support of a suspension bracket of the power unit»).
5. Turn out five bolts of fastening of the top cover of a belt of a drive of the gas-distributing mechanism...
6.... and remove the cover.
7. Turn the crankshaft clockwise on the accessory drive pulley bolt until the marks on the camshaft pulley and the cylinder head cover are aligned. Then loosen up...
8.... finally unscrew the pulley mounting bolt...
9.... and remove the pulley.
10. Turn out three bolts of fastening of the bottom cover of a belt of a drive of the gas-distributing mechanism...
11.... and remove the cover.
Note. It is not necessary to remove the bottom cover before checking the valve timing. This may be necessary if a phase misalignment is detected and it will be necessary to restore the installation with the timing belt loosened.
12. Check up coincidence of labels on a gear pulley of a camshaft and on a cover of a head of the block of cylinders.
