A sign of the need to replace the front crankshaft oil seal is an oil leak through its edge. Oil is sprayed by the rotating crankshaft pulley, as a result of which the entire front of the engine and the timing belt are oiled.
The reason for oiling the clutch discs may be a leak in the gearbox input shaft oil seal or the crankshaft rear oil seal.
Engine and transmission oils have a different smell, so with a certain skill, you can determine by smell which of the oil seals is defective.
Note. There is another way to determine the type of oil. Drop oil into water poured into a vessel in a thin layer (maybe in a puddle). Gear oil will spread over the entire surface of the water in the form of an iridescent film, and engine oil will remain in the form of a drop similar to a lentil grain.
You will need: all the tools needed to remove the timing belt (see «Replacing and adjusting the belt tension, replacing the tension roller of the timing drive»), gearboxes (see «Removal and installation of a transmission»), clutch (see «Removal and installation of clutch»), flywheel (see «Removal, installation and troubleshooting of the flywheel»), as well as a screwdriver and a hammer.
To replace the front crankshaft oil seal, do the following.
1. Disconnect the wire from the terminal «minus» battery.
2. Remove the timing belt (see «Replacing and adjusting the belt tension, replacing the tension roller of the timing drive»).
3. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
4. Using a screwdriver, remove the gland from the holder.
5. Lubricate the working edge of the new oil seal with engine oil, install it in the holder, orienting the working edge inside the engine, and press the oil seal into the holder until it stops using a mandrel. As a mandrel, you can use a suitable size head from the tool kit or an old oil seal.
6. Install all removed parts and components of the gas distribution mechanism in the reverse order of removal.
Note. Bolt of fastening of a pulley of a drive of auxiliary units tighten preliminary the moment of 20 Nm (2.0 kgf·m) and then tighten by an angle of 68°±6°.
7. Adjust the tension of the timing belt (see «Replacing and adjusting the belt tension, replacing the tension roller of the timing drive») and accessory drive belt (see «Checking the tension of the accessory drive belt»).
To replace the crankshaft rear oil seal, perform the following steps.
1. Remove the gearbox (see «Removal and installation of a transmission»).
2. Remove the clutch (see «Removal and installation of clutch»).
3. Remove the flywheel (see «Removal, installation and troubleshooting of the flywheel»).
4. Inspect the gland. If it has lost its tightness, an oil leak will be visible in its lower part.
5. Using a screwdriver, remove the gland.
6. Lubricate the working lip of the new oil seal with engine oil...
7.... install it in the seat of the cylinder block, orienting the working edge inside the engine, and carefully fill the working edge on the crankshaft journal.
8. Press the stuffing box into the seat until it stops using a mandrel of a suitable diameter.
Note. You can use an old oil seal as a mandrel.
9. Install the removed units in the reverse order of removal.
Attention! Be sure to replace the flywheel mounting bolts with new ones. They are not allowed to be reused.
Note. When installing the flywheel, lubricate the threaded part of the flywheel mounting bolts with Loctite Frenetanch thread locking compound or similar. The moment of an inhaling of bolts of fastening of a flywheel 50–55 Nm (5.0–5.5 kgf·m).
