2. Note the location of the old oil seal, then use a screwdriver to remove it from the casing.
3. Remove the spacer from the crankshaft, noting its location.
4. Inspect the spacer and use sandpaper to remove any nicks or burrs that may be causing damage to the new oil seal. If necessary, the spacer can be installed so that the new oil seal is in contact with the unworn area. Clean the gland contact surface in the housing.
5. Lubricate the sealing lips and the outer edge of the new oil seal and install it on the crankshaft, closed side out. Press the gland lightly into the casing with your hand, then using a head or a metal pipe, drive it to the previously marked depth - work very carefully so as not to damage the lips of the gland.
6. Put the spacer on the crankshaft and carefully insert it in a circular motion into the stuffing box.
7. Wipe off excess oil, then install crankshaft gear and new timing belt, refer to Sections Removal, inspection and installation of a toothed drive belt and Removal, inspection and installation of the gear wheel of the drive belt and the tension mechanism.
Flywheel side seal
1. To replace the left crankshaft oil seal, the engine and transmission assembly must be removed. The engine must be separated from the transmission (contact the head Transmission), clutch (where available, refer to Chapter Clutch) and flywheel/drive plate (refer to section Removal, inspection and installation of the flywheel / drive disc this Chapter) must be removed.
2. Remove the old oil seal with a screwdriver, being careful not to damage the surface on the crankshaft. Alternatively, the gland can be removed in another way: drill two small holes in the gland opposite each other and screw self-tapping screws into them; the seal can now be removed with pliers.
3. Inspect the oil seal contact surface on the crankshaft. If it is rough or grooved in the area where the old seal was installed, the new seal should be installed slightly shallower so that it rubs against the unworn surface.
4. Wipe the seal contact surface, then soak the new seal in engine oil and slide it over the crankshaft, closed side out (refer to accompanying illustration).
5. Using a metal tube, hammer the gland into place.
6. Install flywheel/drive disc, refer to Section Removal, inspection and installation of the flywheel / drive disc. Establish coupling as it is described in the Head Clutch, connect the transmission to the engine and install the engine/transmission assembly as described in the relevant chapters of this manual.
