Removing
1. Remove the toothed drive belt as described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of a toothed drive belt.
2a. Camshaft sprocket holding tools - Renault Mot.799-01.
2b. Homemade equivalent.
2c. To remove the camshaft gear, while holding the pulley, unscrew the bolt (refer to illustrations).
3. Remove the pulley from the end of the camshaft. Please note that on its inner surface there is a key that must fit into the groove at the end of the camshaft.
4a. A special puller may be required to remove the crankshaft gear. Note that the key is pressed into the pulley and cannot be separated (refer to accompanying illustration).
4b. Use the tool shown to remove the crankshaft gear. When turning out the central bolt, the gear is removed from the trunnion.
5a. Loosen the nut and remove the washer.
5b. Remove the tensioner pulley from the post on the stuffing box (refer to accompanying illustration).
Inspection
1. Inspect the gear teeth for nicks or other damage. Also inspect the water pump pulley teeth. The teeth are wear resistant and should be retained throughout the life of the engine.
2. Turn the tensioner pulley by hand and check that it rotates freely. Do not attempt to clean it with a solvent that can get into the bearing and wash out the grease. If there is wear, replace the tensioner.
Installation
1. Position the tensioner on the stuffing box post, then install the nut and washer and hand tighten.
2. Slide the gear wheel onto the crankshaft, aligning the key with the groove in the crankshaft.
3. Put the gear wheel on the camshaft flange, engaging the key with the groove, then screw in the bolt. Tighten the bolt to Specifications force, holding the pulley by the method described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of a toothed drive belt.
