Removal
1. Remove the toothed drive belt as described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of the toothed drive belt.
2a. Camshaft timing gear holding tools - Renault Mot.799-01.
2b. Homemade equivalent.
2c. To remove the camshaft timing gear, hold the pulley and remove the bolt (refer to the illustrations).
3. Remove the pulley from the end of the camshaft. Note that there is a key on its inner surface that should fit into a groove on the end of the camshaft.

4a. A special puller may be required to remove the crankshaft timing gear. Note that the key is pressed into the pulley and cannot be separated (refer to the accompanying illustration).
4b. Use the tool shown to remove the crankshaft gear. When the central bolt is unscrewed, the gear is removed from the journal.
5a. Unscrew the nut and remove the washer.
5b. Remove the tensioner pulley from the stand on the seal housing (refer to the accompanying illustration).
Inspection
1. Inspect the gear teeth for nicks and other damage. Also inspect the water pump pulley teeth. The teeth are wear-resistant and should last the life of the engine.
2. Manually rotate the tensioner pulley and check that it rotates freely. Do not attempt to clean it with solvent, which may enter the bearing and wash out the grease. If there is wear, replace the tensioner.
Installation
1. Position the tensioner on the oil seal housing post, then install the nut and washer and tighten it by hand.
2. Place the gear wheel on the crankshaft, aligning the key with the groove in the crankshaft.
3. Place the gear on the camshaft flange, engaging the key with the groove, then screw in the bolt. Tighten the bolt to the specified Specifications force, holding the pulley by the method described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of the toothed drive belt.
