Toothed drive belt (Renault 19)

The drive of the valve timing mechanism on type "F" engines is carried out by means of a toothed drive belt. It rotates the camshaft with a gear ratio of 1:2. Depending on the engine type, the intermediate shaft of the oil pump drive is also driven by means of the belt, and in the case of a diesel engine, the high-pressure fuel pump is connected. In a diesel engine, the control of the camshaft and the high-pressure fuel pump must be very precisely adjusted. Any change in the tension of the toothed belt or its replacement leads to expensive inspection and installation work. Therefore, maintenance work is limited to inspection and control of the belt tension.

Removal the upper timing belt cover

1. 1.7/1.8 liter engine: unscrew 3 bolts (2 left, 1 right) and remove the protective cover.

2. 16-valve engine: unscrew 3 bolts on the left and right sides of the casing and one bolt at the top between the two camshaft sprockets.

3. Diesel: remove the fuel injection pump timing belt pulley cover (2 bolts).

4. Unscrew 3 bolts on the toothed drive belt cover (2 left, 1 right) and 2 bolts in the joint with the lower toothed belt cover and remove the cover.

5. All engine types: when installing the toothed belt cover, make sure it is installed correctly. Don't forget about the spacers (depending on the engine type).
