Removing the timing belt
1. Place the vehicle on a two post lift.
2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
3. Remove the air intake and air resonator.
4. Remove the right front wheel.
5. Remove the attachment drive belt.
6. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
7. Remove the right engine mount.
8. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the top cover of the timing gear drive (1).
9. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the bottom cover of the timing gear (2).
10. Loosen the nut (3) toothed belt tensioner.
Note: Be careful not to drop the crankshaft sprocket when removing the timing belt.
11. Loosen the bolt (4) fixed roller using a special tool to tighten the eccentric idler bolt (Torx key 8 mm with square 12.7 mm) (Mot. 1368).
12. Remove the fixed toothed belt pulley.
13. Remove the timing belt.
14. To turn away a nut and to remove a tension roller of a gear belt.
15. Remove sprocket (toothed pulley) crankshaft.
Installing the timing belt, method 1
Caution: Be sure to replace the timing belt, toothed belt tensioner, crankshaft pulley bolt, toothed belt fixed roller and camshaft end caps with new ones.
Note: This procedure applies when replacing any timing gear components that do not require loosening one or both sprockets (toothed pulleys) camshafts.
Attention: Degrease the end of the crankshaft (from the drive side of the gas distribution mechanism), the thrust surface and the timing hole of the toothed pulley, the installation surface of the pulley on the crankshaft, the end of the camshaft (from the drive side of the gas distribution mechanism). This will prevent the drive belt from slipping, which could cause engine damage.
1. Place the grooves of the camshafts horizontally with a downward offset from the axes of the shafts.
2. Install template (Mot. 1496) (5) on the ends of the camshafts.
3. With eye bolt (6) fix template (Mot. 1496).
4. Place RENAULT emblems (7), engraved on the webs of the camshaft sprockets, vertically and so that they are located on top.
5. Install a new toothed belt tensioner by placing the lug of the tensioner in the groove (8).
6. Fasten, without tightening, the tension roller nut.
7. Install the crankshaft sprocket (9).
8. Install a new timing belt.
9. Install new fixed toothed belt pulley (10).
10. Tighten the toothed belt fixed roller bolt to 50 Nm using the special tool for tightening the eccentric tensioner bolt (wrench Togh 8 mm with square 12.7 mm) (Mot. 1368).
11. Place the regulator pointer (11) opposite the label (12), by turning the eccentric (13) clockwise with 6 mm Allen key (hex key).
12. Tighten the toothed belt tensioner nut to 7 Nm.
13. Insert TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) into the cylinder block.
Note:
There are two types of lower timing cover:
- without damper
- with shutter.

14. Install the lower timing cover (14).
15. Tighten the bolts of the lower cover of the gas distribution mechanism drive to a torque of 12 Nm.

16. Install a new crankshaft pulley.
17. Using a screwdriver (15) make sure the flywheel does not turn (clockwise from the timing drive side), otherwise it is necessary to use a screwdriver to return the crankshaft back until it stops in the TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) (16). The crankshaft groove must be on top.
18. Tighten the pulley bolt of the new crankshaft to 40 Nm, and then tighten to an angle of 145±15° (the crankshaft must rest against the TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489)).

19. Remove the damper from the bottom cover of the timing gear drive.

20. Unscrew the fastening bolt and remove the template (Mot. 1496) from camshafts.
21. Remove the locating pin TDC CHL (L. 1489) from the cylinder block.
22. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise from the side» s of the drive of the gas distribution mechanism until the marks made previously are aligned (on the camshaft phase shifter), then screw in the TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) into the cylinder block.
23. Slowly rotate the crankshaft until it contacts the TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489).
24. Remove TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) from the cylinder block.
25. Make sure that the regulator pointer (17) is opposite the groove (18).
26. If not:
- Loosen the timing belt tensioner nut one turn while holding the eccentric with a 6mm Allen key (hex key).
- Gradually shift the pointer of the regulator (17) until aligned with the mark (18), by turning the eccentric cam (19) clockwise.
- Tighten the tension roller nut to 27 Nm.
Note: Before checking the valve timing, make sure that the tension roller pointer is aligned with the groove (see above).
27. Screw in the TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) into the cylinder block.
28. Slowly rotate the crankshaft until it contacts the TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489).
29. Place (easily) sample (Mot. 1496) at the ends of the camshafts (the grooves of the ends of the camshafts must be located horizontally with an offset downward from the axes of the shafts).
Note: If the installation template cannot be inserted, the camshaft adjustment procedure must be repeated.
30. Remove installation template (Mot. 1496).
31. Remove TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) from the cylinder block.

32. Install the shutter of the lower cover of the timing gear, making sure that the locating pin (20) correctly inserted into the groove (21).

33. Install the lower timing cover.
34. Tighten the bolts securing the lower timing cover to 12 Nm.
35. Apply a drop of silicone sealant to the TDC dowel pin hole plug and tighten to 20 Nm.
36. Install the top cover of the timing gear drive and tighten the bolts and nuts to 46 Nm.
37. Install a new intake camshaft end cap using a 57 mm drift (Mot. 1487).
38. Install a new exhaust camshaft end cap using a 43 mm drift (Mot. 1488).
39. Install the lifting eye on the flywheel side and tighten the fixing bolts to 10 Nm.
40. Install right engine mount.
41. Install the crankshaft pulley.
42. Install the attachment drive belt.
43. Install the front right wheel on the car.
44. Install the air resonator and air intake.
45. Connect the battery.
Installing the timing belt, method 2
Caution: Be sure to replace the timing belt, toothed belt tensioner, crankshaft pulley bolt, toothed belt fixed roller and camshaft end caps with new ones.
Note: This procedure is used when replacing any timing gear components that require loosening one or both camshaft sprockets.
1. Install the tool for fixing and adjusting the camshaft pulleys (Mot. 1490-01) on the camshaft sprockets using a toothed pulley locking tool (Mot. 799-01).
2. Loosen nuts (22) each camshaft sprocket.
3. Remove the fixture for fixing and adjusting the camshaft pulleys (Mot. 1490-01) from the cylinder block.
4. To turn away nuts of sprockets of camshafts.
5. Remove the camshaft sprockets.
Attention: Degrease the end of the crankshaft (from the drive side of the gas distribution mechanism), the thrust surface and the timing hole of the toothed pulley, the installation surface of the pulley on the crankshaft, the end of the camshaft (from the drive side of the gas distribution mechanism). This will prevent the drive belt from slipping, which could cause engine damage.
6. Place the grooves on the ends of the camshafts horizontally with a downward offset from the axes of the shafts.
7. Install template (Mot. 1496) (23) on the ends of the camshafts.
8. Mb bolt (24) fix pattern (Mot. 1496).
9. Install the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets.
10. Fit the camshaft sprocket nuts.
11. Insert TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) into the cylinder block.
12. Using a screwdriver (25) make sure the flywheel does not turn (clockwise from the timing drive side), otherwise it is necessary to use a screwdriver to return the crankshaft back until it stops in the TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) (26). The crankshaft groove must be on top.
13. Place RENAULT emblems (27), engraved on the webs of the camshaft sprockets, vertically and so that they are located on top.
14. Install a new toothed belt tensioner by placing the protrusion of the tensioner in the groove (28).
15. Fasten, without tightening, the tension roller nut.
16. Install a new timing belt, starting with the camshaft sprockets (without changing the stars).
17. Install a tool for fixing and adjusting the camshaft pulleys (Mot. 1490-01) (29) on the camshaft sprockets (use the bolts and nuts of the upper timing cover to install the tool)
Note:
- Follow that. so that the toothed belt between the two camshaft sprockets is properly tensioned.
- If the engine is equipped with a taper bushed crankshaft sprocket, make sure the timing belt is properly tensioned between the exhaust camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket.
18. Install a new fixed timing belt pulley.
19. Tighten the fixed roller bolt to 50 Nm using the special tool for tightening the eccentric idler bolt (Torx key 8 mm with square 12.7 mm,) (Mot. 1368).
20. Place the regulator pointer (11) opposite the label (12), by turning the eccentric (13) clockwise with 6 mm Allen key (hex key).
21. Tighten the toothed belt tensioner nut to 7 Nm.
Note:
There are two types of lower timing cover:
- without damper
- with shutter.

22. Install the lower timing cover (33).
23. Tighten the bolts of the lower cover of the gas distribution mechanism drive to a torque of 12 Nm.

24. Install a new crankshaft pulley.
25. Tighten the new crankshaft pulley bolt to 40 Nm, and then tighten to an angle of 145±15° (the crankshaft must rest against the TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489)).

26. Remove the damper from the bottom cover of the timing gear drive.

27. Unscrew the fastening bolt and remove the template (Mot. 1496) from camshafts.
28. Remove TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) from the cylinder block.
29. Remove the fixture for fixing and adjusting the camshaft pulleys (Mot. 1490-01).
30. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise from the side of the gas distribution mechanism drive until the marks made previously are aligned (on the camshaft phase shifter), then screw in the TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) into the cylinder block.
31. Slowly turn the crankshaft until it contacts the TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489).
32. Remove TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) from the cylinder block.
33. Make sure that the regulator pointer (34) is opposite the groove (35).
34. If this is not the case:
- Loosen the timing belt tensioner nut one turn while holding the eccentric with a 6mm Allen key (hex key).
- Gradually shift the pointer of the regulator (34) until aligned with the mark (35), by turning the eccentric cam (36) clockwise.
- Tighten the tensioner roller nut to 27 Nm.
Note: Before checking the valve timing, make sure that the tension roller pointer is aligned with the groove (see above)
35. Screw in the TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) into the cylinder block.
36. Slowly turn the crankshaft until it contacts the TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489).
37. Place (easily) sample (Mot. 1496) at the ends of the camshafts (the grooves of the ends of the camshafts must be located horizontally with an offset downward from the axes of the shafts).
Note: If the installation template cannot be inserted, the camshaft adjustment procedure must be repeated.
38. Remove installation template (Mot. 1496).
39. Remove TDC locating pin (Mot. 1489) from the cylinder block.

40. Install the shutter of the lower cover of the timing gear, making sure that the locating pin (37) correctly inserted into the groove (38).

41. Install the lower timing cover.
42. Tighten the bolts securing the bottom cover of the timing gear to 12 Nm.
43. Apply a drop of silicone sealant to the TDC dowel pin hole plug and tighten to 20 Nm.
44. Install the top cover of the timing gear drive and tighten the bolts and nuts to 46 Nm.
45. Install a new intake camshaft end cap using a 57 mm drift (Mot. 1487).
46. Install a new exhaust camshaft end cap using a 43 mm drift (Mot. 1488).
47. Install the lifting eye on the flywheel side and tighten the fixing bolts to 10 Nm.
48. Install right engine mount.
49. Install the crankshaft pulley.
50. Install the attachment drive belt.
51. Install the front right wheel on the car.
52. Install the air resonator and air intake.
53. Connect the battery.
