Removing
1. To access the handbrake lever, remove the center console completely (Scenic models) or just the back (all other models), as described in Chapter Body. Disconnect the electrical connector from the handbrake warning light switch and fully release the lever.
2. Block the front wheels, then jack up the rear of the vehicle and place it on axle stands.
3. Turn away fixing nuts/bolts and remove thermal insulation of final system from under the lever of a manual brake.
Note. On some models, it may be necessary to separate the front end of the intermediate pipe of the exhaust system so that the thermal insulation can be removed (refer to section Removing and installing the exhaust system or Section General description and replacement of exhaust system components).
4. Loosen locknut (where available), then loosen the adjusting nut to obtain maximum free play on the handbrake cables (refer to accompanying illustration).
5. Unhook the cables from the equalizer plate, then disconnect the lever rod from the guide.
6. Loosen and remove the arm mounting nuts, then slide the assembly out from under the vehicle (refer to accompanying illustration).
Installation
1. Install in reverse order. Before installing thermal insulation, adjust the length of the handbrake cable as described in Section Handbrake adjustment.
