Removal



1. The rear brake assemblies are connected to the handbrake lever by two cables. Each cable can be removed separately as follows.

2. Block the front wheels, then jack up the rear of the vehicle and place it on axle stands.

3. To gain access to the base of the handbrake lever, unscrew the mounting nuts/bolts and remove the exhaust system insulation.

4. Remove the rear brake shoes as described in Section Replacing the rear brake pads.

5. Disconnect the cable end and release the cable from the drum brake support shield (refer to the accompanying illustration).

6. Moving along the cable and marking its location, release it from all the brackets and ties (refer to the accompanying illustration). Separate the front end of the cable from the equalizer plate, then separate the end of the cable housing from the vehicle body and remove the cable.



Installation



1. Install in reverse order, using the marks made during removal. Before installing the thermal insulation, adjust the length of the cable as described in Section Adjusting the handbrake.
