Note. Some drivers, in an effort to wear out the parking brake cables less, try to use them less often. Such «saving» leads to the opposite result: the cables, rarely moving in the shells, gradually lose their mobility and eventually jam and break. Use the parking brake whenever necessary.
You will need: all the tools needed to remove the brake drum (see «Removal and installation of a brake drum»), rear wheel brake shoes (see «Replacing the brake pads of the brake mechanism of the rear wheel») and body floor tunnel lining (see «Removal and installation of floor tunnel lining»), as well as the key «at 13».
Note. Replacing the rear cable is shown using the left cable as an example. The right rear cable is replaced in the same way.
To replace the rear parking brake cable, do the following.
1. Fully loosen the parking brake cables by unscrewing the actuator adjusting nut to the end of the front cable threaded lug (see point 2. «Parking brake actuator adjustment»).
2. Remove the brake drum from the side of the cable to be replaced (see «Removal and installation of a brake drum»).
3. Remove the rear brake pad (see «Replacing the brake pads of the brake mechanism of the rear wheel») and disconnect the tip of the cable from the expansion lever by pressing the cable spring forward with pliers.
4. Squeeze the cable sheath retainer with pliers...
5.... and remove the cable from the hole in the brake shield.
6. Take out a cable from the holder on the lever of a beam of a back suspension bracket.
7. Slightly pull the cable into the passenger compartment and disconnect it from the equalizer by removing the tip of the cable from the groove of the equalizer.
Note. The lining of the floor tunnel was removed in the process of loosening the tension of the drive cables (see point 1 above).
8. From below, pull the cable out of the hole in the base of the body and remove from the vehicle.
Note. If the cable removed from the vehicle is difficult to move in the shell, lubricate it. Pour engine or gear oil into the casing until it starts to run out of the opposite end of the casing. During the pouring process, periodically move the cable in the sheath.
9. Install the rear parking brake cable and all removed parts in the reverse order of removal.
To replace the front parking brake cable, do the following.
1. Fully loosen the parking brake cables by unscrewing the actuator adjusting nut to the end of the front cable threaded lug (see point 3 «Parking brake actuator adjustment»).
2. Disconnect both rear drive cables from the equalizer by sliding the ends of the cables out of the slots in the equalizer.
3. Cut the floor mat at the rear of the arm and lay the mat pieces apart.
Note. The floor mat is cut so as not to completely remove the front seats and the floor mat to gain access to the lower part of the parking brake lever. The cut part of the mat will not be visible, as it is covered by the lining of the floor tunnel.
4. Completely unscrew the adjusting nut from the threaded end of the cable...
5.... and, pulling the cable back from the groove of the parking brake lever sector, remove the cable assembly with the equalizer.
6. Install the front parking brake cable and all removed parts in the reverse order of removal.
After replacing any of the cables, adjust the parking brake actuator (see «Parking brake actuator adjustment»).
