In order for the pistons in the brake calipers to be able to move further out of the brake cylinder with increasing wear of the brake pads, they must be sunk before installing new, thicker brake pads. At the same time, make sure that excess brake fluid does not flow out of the reservoir. If necessary, remove excess brake fluid in advance.
1. Raise the machine at the rear and secure.
2. Remove wheels.
3. Release the parking brake.
4. Using a thin screwdriver, carefully pry up the safety clip from the wedge on the inside of the brake.
5. Use a screwdriver to remove the brake caliper wedge. At the same time, lightly press the wheel brake caliper inward against the spring.
6. Remove the outer and inner pads from their sockets.
7. If necessary, remove both tie-down straps. At the same time, remember or write down the sequence of work.
8. By turning clockwise, completely screw the pistons into the wheel brake caliper. To do this, insert a square into the grooves of the piston of the brake cylinder.
9. If it is not possible to screw in, then the brake cylinder must be replaced.
10. Wipe the brake pad sockets with a rag and alcohol (never use petrol) from dirt.
11. Scrape off burnt residues with a screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the piston seal when doing this.
12. Before installing the brake pads, install the pistons so that the groove on the piston points to the bleeder port.
13. Further installation is carried out as described for the Bendix front brakes.
14. Press the brake pedal several times to press the brake pads against the surface of the brake discs. At the same time, the parking brake clearance is adjusted.
15. Adjust the parking brake.
Replacing the rear sealing cuffs of the brake system
The sequence of work when replacing the sealing cuffs of the brake cylinder piston on the rear wheels is similar to the sequence of work for the front brakes. In this case, it is necessary to unscrew the piston from the cylinder in the brake caliper by turning it counterclockwise. After that, the sealing collar must be removed from the brake cylinder housing. If there are marks from severe wear, be sure to replace both brake cylinders. The control device for the parking brake actuator functions without wear, as it works in the brake fluid.
Before installing an old or new caliper, it is necessary to pour a certain amount of brake fluid into the brake cylinder through the bleeder screw. This will make it easier to bleed the brakes.
