Checking the thickness of drum brake linings (Renault 19)
The thickness of the brake shoe linings can be checked through the hole in the brake shield. To do this, shine a flashlight into this hole. To accurately measure the thickness of the brake shoe linings, it is necessary to remove the brake drum, as described in the section "Removing the brake drum". The new primary brake shoe should be slightly thicker than the secondary brake shoe. Since the lining of the primary brake shoe wears out more, both shoes wear down almost simultaneously. If the thickness of the shoe together with the lining is 2.5 mm or less, the brake shoes must be replaced.
