With the rear wheel removed, you can see the following elements of disc brakes
1 - brake disc; 2 - support; 3 - a wedge with a lock cotter pin; 4 - lever for turning on the parking brake with the end of the cable; 5 - body of the brake cylinder; 6 - bleed valve with dust cap; 7 - pipeline of the brake mechanism; 8 - anti-vibration spring - for an external brake shoe is not visible in the figure; 9 - brake pads.
Elements of the rear disc brake:
1 - the left side of the caliper with the piston of the brake cylinder; 2 - locking bolt; 3 - internal brake shoe with anti-vibration spring; 4 - external brake shoe with anti-vibration spring; 5 - a wedge with a lock cotter pin; 6 - right side of the caliper; 7 - bleed valve with dust cap; 8 - right body of the piston of the brake cylinder; 9 - guide bolt with a dustproof cuff.
On modifications of the Renault 19 with ABS, disc brakes are also installed on the rear wheels. As with the front wheels, we are talking about disc brakes with a floating caliper (Bendix), which have an absolutely identical device.
The rear wheels can also be blocked with a parking brake.
Automatic adjustment
Regardless of the design, disc brakes are always self-adjusting. As the brake pad wears, the brake piston simply moves further out of the cylinder body and thus ensures that the brake pads are correctly positioned in relation to the brake disc. In this case, it is necessary to control the level of brake fluid in the tank. The situation is different with the parking brake drive. Here, the pusher in the brake cylinder lacks the extension of the piston, due to wear of the brake pads. This state of the brake system prevents the regulating device, which gives out the pusher with each press on the brake pedal. The main element of this regulating device is a thread on which the second part of the device is located, which unscrews forward as the brake pad wears. Because of this, the pusher «lengthens». When replacing the brake pads, the piston of the brake cylinder cannot simply be pressed in; for this, the adjusting device must be screwed in.
