Helpful Hint: Perform the work on the car with the rear wheels raised (on a lift or a vehicle supported by a jack). The parking brake lever must be lowered all the way down (the car is released).
You will need: a wheel bolt wrench, a 30 mm socket head, a mounting blade (two), and a caliper.
1. Engage 1st gear and place chocks under the front wheels.
2. Remove the decorative cap of the rear wheel (see "Wheel replacement").
3. Using a thin chisel and a hammer, carefully press the protective cap out of the hub...
4. ...and remove it.
5. Loosen the hub nut and wheel mounting bolts.
6. Raise the rear wheel and place the rear of the vehicle on the side of the drum being removed on a support. Remove the rear wheel.
7. Check that the parking brake lever is lowered all the way down (the car is released).
8. Unscrew the rear wheel hub nut...
Warning: Do not reuse the hub nut.
9. ...and remove the brake drum together with the bearing from the hub journal.
Note.
- The brake drum is made as one piece with the hub.
10. Measure the diameter of the working surface with a caliper. If the diameter exceeds the maximum allowable, the drum must be replaced.
Warning: Replace brake drums in pairs (left and right at the same time).
11. Check the ease of rotation and absence of play of the hub bearing. Replace the bearing if necessary.
Warning: Do not press the bearing out of the brake drum unless absolutely necessary. The removed bearing cannot be reused.
12. Similarly, remove and check the right brake drum.
13. When installing the old drum, use a file to remove the ridge on the working surface of the drum that has formed as a result of wear.
14. Reset the gap adjuster to its original state (see point 21 "Replacing the brake pads of the rear wheel brake mechanism").
15. Bring the brake pads together using two mounting blades.
16. Install the drum in the reverse order of removal. Finally tighten the hub nut to a torque of 175 N·m (17.5 kgf·m).
Warning: Do not move the vehicle with the hub nut loose, as this will damage the bearing separator.
17. Adjust the clearance between the brake shoes and the drum by pressing the brake pedal 10-15 times. Each time you press it, you should hear the adjuster click. Once the clicking stops, the clearance is set.
18. Press the protective cap into the hub.
19. Install the wheel and decorative cap (see "Wheel replacement").
20. Check the ease of rotation of the wheel. Slight contact of the drum with the pads is permissible.
