Note. Renault recommends lowering the engine together with the transmission from the engine compartment.
Removing
1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery (contact the head Engine electrical equipment for Scenic models).
Attention! If the radio in your car is coded, make sure you know the code before disconnecting the battery.
2. Remove a radiator as it is described in the Head Cooling, heating system. Also disconnect the top hose from the thermostat housing and the bottom hose from the coolant pipe.
3. Drain the oil from the manual gearbox as described in Chapter Transmission.
4. If necessary, drain the engine oil as described in Chapter Maintenance.
5. Remove the hood (contact the head Body).
6. Remove the air filter assembly and air duct as described in Chapter Power and exhaust systems. On models with a turbocharger, remove the air duct connecting the intercooler to the turbocharger and intake manifold. Disconnect the cooling system hoses from the turbocharger.
7. Engage the handbrake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on axle stands. Remove both front wheels. Where available, remove the lower engine cover.
8. Remove liners of arches of forward wheels.
9. Remove the auxiliary drive belt as described in Chapter Maintenance.
10. On air-conditioned models, remove the compressor as described in Chapter 3, but leave the hoses connected and move it out of the way.
11. Remove the oil filter as described in Chapter Maintenance.
12. Remove the pump and the reservoir of a steering with the amplifier from the engine as it is described in the Head Suspension and steering, but do not disconnect the tubes. Move the pump to the side.
13. Mark the location, then disconnect the heater hoses from the thermostat housing on the left side of the cylinder head.
14. Disconnect the vacuum brake booster block hose from the intake manifold on the left side of the cylinder head.
15. Disconnect the pipes and wiring from the EGR and fast idle solenoid valves. On F9Q engines, disconnect the fuel pump harness from the injection control unit and from all sensors on the engine.
16. On F8Q engines, remove the preheat control unit and tie it to the engine (contact the head Engine electrical equipment).
17. Disconnect the throttle cable (where available) and the clutch cable from the engine as described in Chapter Power and exhaust systems and Head Clutch.
18. On models without a turbocharger, disconnect the wiring harness from the altitude corrector sensor.
19. Remove the top and side covers from the relay box on the left side of the engine compartment; release the relay board and wiring ties and place the electrical wiring on the motor.
20. Squeeze the connector and disconnect the fuel supply line from the fuel filter.
21. Separate the fuel return connector from the fuel pump.
22. Turn away a cable of weight from a bulkhead.
23. Where applicable, remove the reinforcing rod between the front suspension strut domes.
24. Remove the battery as described in Chapter Engine electrical equipment. On Scenic models, unscrew the additional fuse box in the engine compartment and move it to the side.
25. Disconnect the starter power cable and preheat cable from the wiring connector on the right side of the battery compartment.
26. Turn away a nut from a tip of the left steering draft and by means of a stripper of spherical hinges disconnect it from the lever of a rotary fist.
27. Turn away bolts, fastening an internal rubber boot of the left power shaft and a metal ring to transmission.
28. Remove the two mounting bolts securing the left brake caliper to the steering knuckle and disconnect the pad wear sensor wiring. Tie the caliper to the spring.
29. Turn away and remove a coupling bolt fixing the spherical hinge of the left lower lever to a rotary fist.
30. Unscrew and remove both bolts securing the left suspension strut to the steering knuckle (note that the nuts are on the back of the shroud).
31. Lower the lower suspension arm down, then separate the drive shaft from the differential drive wheel and remove it together with the steering knuckle.
32. Make sure the tripod joint components remain in place at the inner end of the drive shaft or they may fall out into the transmission. There may be some loss of oil from the gearbox, so place a small container under the gearbox.
33. Working under the vehicle, drive out the roll pin securing the right drive shaft to the differential drive wheel shaft.
34. Remove the nut from the right tie rod end and disconnect it from the steering knuckle arm.
35. Unscrew and remove the upper bolt securing the right suspension strut to the steering knuckle (note that the nut is on the back). then loosen (but don't shoot) bottom bolt.
36. Pull the drive shaft towards you and disconnect its inner end from the grooves on the differential drive wheel shaft. Tie the drive shaft to the steering gear.
37. Remove a reception pipe as it is described in the Head Power and exhaust systems.
38. Loosen the screws and remove the plastic cover from the base of the transmission, then mark the pinch bolt and separate the stem.
39. Where available, separate the power steering hydraulic tubes from the transmission.
40. Extend the spring clip and remove the vehicle speed sensor from the rear of the transmission.
41. Disconnect the wiring from the reversing light switch on the transmission.
42. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler pipes under the oil filter.
43. Attach the winch to the mounting lugs and slightly raise the engine.
44. Turn away (but don't shoot) rear engine/transmission mount rear link bolt, then loosen and remove the front link bolt. Note the correct orientation of the shock absorber, then unscrew it from the top of the rear support. Also unbolt the rear support bracket from the transmission.
45. Remove the plastic cover of the right engine mount. Remove the nuts securing the right mount/rubber pad to the engine and body. Remove the rubber from the support.
46. Remove the nuts securing the left engine mount/rubber cushion to the transmission and body, and the reinforcing bracket nut. Remove the rubber from the support.
47. Set the steering gear to position "directly", then loosen and remove the eccentric bolt securing the steering column base to the steering gear and separate the steering column from the steering gear.
Attention! On models with a driver's airbag, it is important not to damage the airbag rotary switch below the steering wheel. Before removing the steering column, the steering wheel must be locked with a special tool.
48. Turn away four bolts of fastening in corners of a stretcher so that it was lowered from the bottom on 10 mm.
49. Loosen the bolts securing the two reinforcing brackets to the bottom.
50. Turn away as far as possible fixing bolts of the steering mechanism. The two reinforcing brackets must be left in position.
51. Turn away the holders fastening a tube of a hydraulic system of a steering with the amplifier to a stretcher.
52. Remove the mounting bolts and tie up the steering gear as high as possible from the subframe.
53. Remove the bolts and heat shields from the bottom of the shift lever, then unhook the return spring from the shift rod.
54. Turn the stem back and secure it in this position.
55. Remove the speed / crankshaft position sensor, disconnect the wiring and release it from the subframe.
56. Remove the horn.
57. Prepare a dolly with blocks of wood to support the subframe and check that the engine/transmission assembly is supported securely. Renault mechanics use a special trolley (Mot. 1040-01) and supporting tools Mot. 1159 and Mot. 1159-02.
58. Turn away bolts of fastening of a subframe to the bottom, noticing a location of spacers and washers. Don't forget to remove the power steering tube bolts to the subframe.
59. Raise the car body, then release the handbrake and move the car back. Then lower the vehicle to the ground and apply the handbrake.
60. Check again that all components that may interfere with the removal of the engine / transmission assembly have been removed or disconnected. Remove the assembly from the subframe.
Installation
1. Install in reverse order, tighten all nuts and bolts to the torque given in the Specifications. When fixing the subframe to the bottom, screw 100 mm rods into the nuts to adjust the position of the bolt holes. With the front of the subframe aligned, insert the rear bolts, then unscrew the rods and insert the front bolts. At connection of a steering column with the steering mechanism be guided by the Head Suspension and steering. Top up the fluid level in the power steering hydraulic system. Fill the engine with oil and the cooling system with coolant as described in Chapter Maintenance. Bleed the fuel system as described in Chapter Power and exhaust systems. On models with a turbocharger, before starting the engine, make sure that the lubrication system is filled as described in Chapter Maintenance. Before performing a test drive, depress the brake pedal several times until the brake pads return to their normal position.
