If the engine needs to be removed for rebuilding, there are a few preliminary steps to take.

The choice of location for the work is extremely important. You will need sufficient work space, as well as a garage where you can leave the car during the repair period.

Cleaning the engine bay and engine/transmission before beginning the removal procedure will help keep things clean during the process.

A special winch or A-frame of sufficient lifting capacity will be required.

If you are removing the engine for the first time, you will need an assistant. Advice and assistance from a more experienced person will also be useful. One person cannot simultaneously perform all the actions required to lift the engine from the car.

Plan the job in advance. Before you begin, acquire all the tools and equipment you will need. In addition to a winch, you will need a heavy-duty jack, a full set of wrenches and sockets, wooden blocks, rags, and solvent to clean up and wipe up spilled oil, coolant, and fuel for removing and installing the engine/transmission.

Some of the work will have to be entrusted to a car repair shop, as it will require special equipment. Agree on this in advance.

Use extreme caution when removing and installing the engine/transmission. Careless handling may result in serious injury.
