Having assessed the opportunities of the Eastern European, Asian and African markets in time, the company's marketers decided to enter these territories not with a redesigned car from the existing model range, but with a completely new model.
The design of the Logan model began in 1998. The project received the internal index X90. The designers were tasked with creating a compact family car with a starting price of 5,000 euros. Thanks to the use of computer modeling, not a single pre-production sample was created, which saved about 20 million euros. In total, 360 million euros were spent on design work - a record low amount for the development of a new car. To reduce the cost, the principle of broad unification with other models of the concern was used: the front suspension was borrowed from Renault Clio II, the rear suspension and heating system - from Renault Modus, the electronic control unit - from Renault Tv / Ingo. The cooling system deflectors and the gear shift handle - from Espace, the gearbox and clutch - from the second generation Renault Megane. But, without a doubt, Logan borrowed most of all from Clio: engines, steering, rear brakes, instrument panel, door handles, steering wheel and steering column switches.
The first generation of Renault Logan in a sedan body was presented in 2004. In 2006, the premiere of the station wagon version with the abbreviation MCV (Multi Convivial Vehicle - "car for all occasions") took place. Unlike most modern station wagons, the Logan MCV has a double-leaf tailgate, which makes it look like a commercial "van". By the way, many owners use this car as a delivery vehicle. Modifications in the form of a cargo van Logan Van and a pickup Logan Pick-Up were created especially for this category of buyers.
Reliability, decent quality and affordable price made Logan a sales leader, and many countries around the world acquired a license to assemble the model. In particular, Logan MCV under the name Lada Largus began to be assembled at the VAZ plant in Russia.
Due to such popularity, the model was first restyled in 2008, and in 2012, the second generation of Renault Logan premiered at the Paris Motor Show. Like its predecessor, the new car is produced in different countries and sold under different names. It is noteworthy that, for example, in Turkey, the second generation Renault Logan is produced under the name Renault Symbol. Thus, the model is also the third generation of the compact sedan Symbol, the two previous generations of which had a common platform with the Renault Clio hatchbacks. In general, Renault Clio Sedan, Renault Thalia, Nissan Platina were added to the old market names.
The premiere of the second-generation Logan MCV station wagon under the Dacia brand took place a year later at the Geneva Motor Show. The model's trunk received one lifting door instead of two hinged ones, like its predecessor. In addition, the Logan MCV is now offered only in a five-seater version. Thus, the model is no longer associated with a delivery van, but is a respectable family car.
The new Logan managed to retain all the features that made the previous generation model popular: a spacious interior, a huge trunk, a reliable energy-intensive suspension and an economical, unpretentious engine under the hood. However, the appearance of the car has changed significantly. The company's designers were able to, while preserving the recognizable features of the old Logan (for example, the profile of the door frames or the curvature of the rear pillar), make the car more attractive and modern. The new head optics go well with the enlarged radiator grille with chrome inserts. The new bumper features well-designed areas of the central air intake and fog lights. Attractive taillights have changed the rear of both the sedan and the station wagon almost beyond recognition. In general, the new Logan has become more rounded and swift.
The interior of the new model has also changed significantly. Excessive modesty and utilitarianism are a thing of the past: the dashboard is decorated with chrome inserts, and the seats have become more comfortable. Even in the basic version, there is the ability to adjust the steering wheel height, a passenger airbag in the front seat, air conditioning, front electric windows and a radio with a USB port. In more expensive trim levels, the buyer gets a leather steering wheel, electric heated exterior mirrors, cruise control, parking sensors, climate control, fog lights and a color display of the MediaNAV multimedia system with navigation. In other words, this is already a car that can compete even with more expensive models.
The Logan sedan has a luggage compartment capacity of 510 liters, and if you fold the rear seats, the useful space for luggage will almost double. The Logan MCV wagon boasts an even more spacious luggage compartment: 573 liters in its normal state and as much as 1,518 liters after folding the rear seats.
The line of power units of the second generation Logan includes both petrol and diesel engines. In addition to the already familiar from the previous generation eight- and 16-valve 1.6-liter petrol engines with a capacity of 82 and 102 hp, respectively, as well as a 1.5-liter diesel with a capacity of 84 hp, the car received a new economical 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with a capacity of 73 hp. All engines are equipped only with mechanical five-speed gearboxes.
The new Logan is a practical, reliable, economical and attractive car with an affordable price. Currently, it is assembled at factories in Romania, Russia, Turkey, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, India, Iran and Morocco.
