Removal the drive shaft boot from the wheel side



1. Place the vehicle on a two-post lift.

2. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the engine protective pan.

3. Drain the oil from the gearbox

4. Remove the front wheel from the corresponding side of the vehicle.

5. Remove the drive shaft from the corresponding side.

6. Remove the output seal from the corresponding side of the differential.

7. Using a hacksaw or nippers, remove the large (10) and small (11) boot clamps, being careful not to damage the hinge housing or drive shaft.

8. Bend back the boot to release the steering knuckle housing.



9. Cut off the drive shaft boot.

10. Remove as much grease as possible from the drive shaft joint housing.

Note: Do not use solvents to remove grease.


11. Using a hammer and a rounded punch, strike the ball race (12) several times to disengage the stub axle housing (13) from the drive shaft.

Installing the drive shaft boot on the wheel side



Caution: Replace the boot, retaining ring and boot clamps with new ones after each removal.


1. Using a cleaning agent, clean the drive shaft and the steering knuckle housing.

2. Place the small clamp (15) on the drive shaft.

3. To facilitate installation of the boot, apply a thin layer of grease supplied with the new boot to the drive shaft.

5. Insert the edges of the boot into the groove of the drive shaft.

6. Install the retaining ring (17)

7. Apply grease between the drive shaft boot and the steering knuckle housing.

8. Install the pivot pin housing (18) onto the drive shaft by tapping the pivot pin housing with a hammer through a copper rod until the retaining ring snaps into place.

9. Place the edges of the drive shaft boot into the groove on the steering knuckle housing.

Note: Make sure the boot lips are seated correctly in the drive shaft groove.


10. Install the small clamp on the drive shaft boot.

11. Install a large clamp on the drive shaft boot.

12. Tighten the clamps using special tools (Tav. 1168) (19) or (Tav. 1784) (20).

13. Install the differential output seal on the appropriate side.

14. Install the front drive shaft on the appropriate side of the vehicle.

15. Install the front wheel on the appropriate side of the vehicle.

16. Fill the gearbox with oil.

17. Install the engine protective pan.
