Already in the first months after the start of sales in Germany in early 1989, the Renault 19 became the No. 1 import car in its class. The timeline below not only illustrates the desire of manufacturers to improve the Renault 19 by improving its design, but also introduces individual model variants and special modifications, which will be very useful when buying a used car.
1989
January
From January 19, about 5 months after the start of sales of the model in France, Renault 19 began to be sold in Germany. It was offered as a 2- and 4-door version in three trim levels (e 1, e 2 and e 3), which, in turn, was subdivided as follows: e 1=TR, TD; e 2= GTR, GTS, GTX and GTD; e 3= TSE, TXE, TDE. With the start of sales, Renault 19 was also sold with a diesel engine in the configuration TD, GTD, TDE. Only Renault 19 TR and GTR were sold with a gasoline carburetor engine without a catalyst (with an engine capacity of 1.4 l). All other engines were equipped with a triple acting variable catalyst.
Engines: With a working volume of 1.4 liters, it has a power of 43 kW, respectively, 1.8 liters - 54 kW; 1.8 l - 65 kW and 1.9 l diesel - 47 kW.
Gearboxes: All Renault 19s with single point injection are equipped with a 5 speed gearbox. At the request of the buyer, a 3-speed automatic transmission can be installed.
Body: Body reinforced with spars; glued laminated windshield; well-fitted side windows; recessed gutters; integrated rear spoiler; spoilers located in the lower part of the body; two exterior mirrors controlled from the passenger compartment.
Suspension and brakes: MacPherson struts supported by transverse swing arms mounted on subframe; stabilizers; rack and pinion steering, optionally equipped with a servo drive.
Wheels: All Renault 19s have factory fitted steel rims and tires ranging from 165/70 R 13 T to 175/70 R 13 H (depending on modification).
Equipment e 1 (TR, TD): single key system; heated rear window; windshield wiper with two speeds (switching on at intervals and frequent cleaning of the glass); reversing lights; fog lights; connector for installing a radio; rounded adjustable headrests; mileage counter; fuel level indicator; the upholstery of the doors is similar to the upholstery of the seats.
Equipment e 2 (GTR, GTS, GTX, GTD): in addition to e 1 - rear wiper and washer; oil level indicator; side safety bars; warning signal «Turn on the light»; central supply of warm air; card slot in front passenger door; two ashtrays at the back; special upholstery material; trunk and glove compartment lighting; asymmetrical (1/3:2/3) folding rear seat backs; padded trunk.
Options e 3 (TSE, TXE, TDE): in addition to e 2 - panoramic glass at the rear (on 2-door version); sound signal for 2 tones; fog lights; central locking with infrared remote control; electric front windows; velor seat upholstery; upholstered headrests (adjustable in vertical and horizontal plane; driver's seat with lumbar support and a change in its height; adjustable steering column; supply of warm air from the heating system to the rear seats.

23,500 Renault 19s have already been sold. Of these, over 80% are cars with a catalyst and only 5% are the carburetor version of the Renault 19 with a 1.4-liter engine.

At the Frankfurt fair in 1989, the classic Renault 19 sedan was presented. It received the designation Chamade. With a total length of 4.26 m, the sedan body was 11 cm longer than the previous version (hatchback). The front of the Chamade is identical to its predecessor. Only the rear outlines of the body have been changed. The rear bumper and trapezoidal taillights also have a different shape. The rear seatbacks are asymmetrically divided and can be folded forward.
At the same fair, the 16-valve Renault 19 was shown. It was the premiere of the sports series of these cars in Germany. Initially, this series was represented exclusively by two-door cars equipped with a 4-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 1764 cm3, and a power of 99 kW at 6500 rpm. The 16-valve Renault 19 is equipped with a catalytic converter.
The 16-valve Renault 19 has a lower seating position. Its front suspension is lower by 15mm and the rear by 20mm. In addition, the suspension of this Renault 19 is equipped with more powerful springs and shock absorbers, reinforced stabilizers and silent blocks. On the Renault 19 GTX and TXE with a 16-valve engine, unlike other modifications of the Renault 19, reinforced stabilizers are installed (24.5 mm instead of 22 mm in diameter). The stock 16-valve Renault 19 is fitted with wide 195/50 R 15 V tires on 6 1/2 Jґ14 steel rims. Lightweight aluminum rims can be fitted upon request. The braking system of the 16-valve P19 was equipped with ABS (Bendix) and had front ventilated brake discs. The rear wheel brakes were additionally equipped with a double brake force limiter depending on the load on the wheels.
Appearance: car-colored bumper with integrated spoiler and brake cooler; turn signals in the bumper; additional headlights; enlarged door sills painted to match the color of the car; exterior mirrors painted to match the color of the car; rear spoilers; gray side door moldings at waist level; tinted windows. Interior finishing: for standard equipment - deluxe (e 3) multi-dimensionally adjustable sports seats available, optionally upholstered in black leather; sports steering wheel, gear knob and safety accordion with leather upholstery; new dashboard design; tachometer and oil level indicator.

Presentation of a special modification of the Renault 19 TX i. It was created on the basis of Renault 19 TXE. On request, the following could be installed in the car: leather seats combined with velor with an elongated bottom cushion; sports steering wheel; interior with leather upholstery; lacquered bumpers and exterior mirrors painted to match the color of the car. Renault 19 TX i was sold in two- and four-door versions.

Renault 19 was named by readers of an automotive magazine «Motorsport» «the best car in the world» of his class. The production of the basic configuration e 1 in the TR and TD variants has been discontinued.
February
The sale of the Renault 19 GTS Dynamic model with a 1.7-liter engine and a power of 54 kW has begun. Externally, the P19 GTS Dynamic was recognizable by the blue lettering on the Dynamic tires, a painted bumper, and a car-colored exterior mirror. Additionally, the model was equipped with fog lights and decorative caps on the wheels.

Diesel modification Renault 19 was equipped with a catalyst and thus began to meet the requirements for exhaust gas emissions (less than 0.08 g per km). On the Renault 19, a sliding roof with sun blinds and electric drive could be optionally installed.
September
A special modification of the Renault 19 GTS Dynamic, which was widespread in a short time, was created in a new version and received the designation «Dynamic II» . The sale of the 16-valve Renault 19, presented at the Frankfurt fair in 1989, began.
October
Renault 19 cabriolet appeared on the German market. It was created with the participation of the company «Karmann» in Osnabrück. The basis of the convertible Renault 19 was a two-door limousine. Two 1.8-liter engines with a power of 65 kW and 99 kW were supplied to choose from. The suspension of the cabriolet exactly repeats the suspension of the P19 TXE limousine or 16-valve modification. The equipment also largely repeated the equipment of the P19 limousine.

The base trims of the Renault 19 were named GTR, GTS and GTD. Renault 19 modifications with improved equipment are designated as TSE, TDE and TXE.

Renault 19 Clio by readers of an automotive magazine «Motorsport» was named in the new year «the best car in the world» in your class.

All modifications of the Renault 19 began to be sold with an updated external and internal design. Now, the designations of modifications for 3 types of configurations began to be subdivided, like the Renault 19 Clio, into RC, RN and RT. The engines were also upgraded and their range was supplemented with three new versions.
Engines: 1.8-liter 65 kW; 1.8-liter 81 kW; 1.9 liter turbocharged diesel engine with 66 kW catalytic converter. Gearbox: optional on Renault 19 with 1.8-litre engine (65 kW) a new 4-speed automatic transmission with electronic control could be installed. Body: The new headlight shape and the new grille with improved airflow give the Renault 19 a more dynamic look. The body frame was also reinforced. Salon: new dashboard design. Renault 19 with 1.8i engine (81 kW) only offered in RT trim.

Optionally, an airbag and a seat belt tensioner could be installed. Child seats were installed in the back seat.
1993
Sale of modifications of Renault 19 Limited and Driver has begun (have inscriptions on the body). They were equipped with a 1.8-liter engine with a capacity of 54 kW or 65 kW, as well as a turbodiesel (66 kW). Driver was equipped with an airbag and a seat belt tensioner. On the Limited are installed additionally: power steering; folding top with electric drive; front power windows; central locking with remote control; velor interior; fog lights; heat-insulated glass; turn signals; height-adjustable driver's seat; special lightweight metal wheels
