Service #2

To check the oil level in the gearbox, use the inspection hole "1", closed with a bolt. To completely drain the transmission oil, unscrew the threaded plug of the outlet hole "2".
The automatic transmission is filled with a synthetic fluid called Automatic Transmission Fluid (fluid for automatic (hydraulic) gearboxes). It serves as a lubricant and ensures the creation of hydraulic pressure in the gearbox. In order for it to meet the requirements of the automatic gearbox in Renault 19, you need to use ATF brand "ELF" Renaultmatic D2. In extreme cases, you can also use Mobil ATF 220 D or Texamatic 4011. Never mix different types of gearbox fluids! Maintaining the recommended ATF level in the automatic gearbox is extremely important for its flawless operation. Therefore, regularly check the fluid level in the automatic gearbox.
- When checking the ATF level, it must be at operating temperature (around 60°C). To do this, drive the car for about 10 minutes.
- Place the car horizontally, secure it with the parking brake and press the brake pedal.
- Place the automatic transmission selector lever in the "P" position and wait at least one minute.
- Pull the dipstick out of the transmission with the engine idling, wipe it with a clean soft cloth, reinsert it and pull it out again. The fluid level should be between the upper and lower control marks. It should never be below the lower mark on a cold engine or above the upper mark on a hot engine.
- If necessary, add ATF of the recommended grade through the dipstick guide tube using a clean funnel or hose.
- If the level is too high, the excess ATF must be drained, as this may cause malfunctions in the gearbox.
- If the fluid in the transmission is dark brown or black and has a burnt smell, this indicates severe damage to the transmission.
- If the fluid level is below the lower control mark, the gearbox must be checked for leaks.
ATF fluid condition
When measuring the fluid level in the automatic transmission, the color and smell of the ATF should be checked at the same time. Based on this, you can judge the condition of the drive.
(Material is located on the source website Renaultbook.ru)
- clear and red: the liquid is in good condition,
- burnt smell and dark color: the clutch couplings are burnt. The gearbox needs to be replaced.
- solid sediment (metal shavings) in ATF: the gearbox needs to be replaced.
- resinous and sticky ATF: the gearbox often overheated, it needs to be disassembled and repaired.
