Service No. 2
To control the oil level in the gearbox, use the control hole «1», closed with a bolt. To completely drain the gear oil, unscrew the drain plug «2».
The automatic transmission is filled with a synthetic fluid called Automatic Transmission Fluid (liquid for automatic (hydraulic) gearboxes). It serves as a lubricant and provides hydraulic pressure to the gearbox. In order for it to meet the requirements of an automatic transmission in Renault 19, you need to use ATF brand «ELF» Renaultmatic D2. In extreme cases, Mobil ATF 220 D or Texamatic 4011 can also be used. Never mix different types of transmission fluids! Compliance with the recommended level of ATF in an automatic transmission is essential for its perfect operation. Therefore, regularly check the fluid level in the automatic transmission.
- When checking the ATF level, it must be at operating temperature (approx. 60°C). To do this, you need to drive about 10 minutes by car.
- Park the machine horizontally, apply the parking brake and depress the brake pedal.
- Place the automatic transmission control lever in position «P» and wait at least one minute.
- Pull the dipstick out of the transmission with the engine idling, wipe it with a clean soft cloth, reinsert it, and pull it out again. The fluid level must be between the upper and lower control marks. It should never be lower than the lower mark on a cold engine and higher than the upper mark on a hot engine.
- If necessary, top up with the recommended brand of ATF through the dipstick guide tube using a clean funnel or hose.
- If the level is too high, then the excess ATF must be drained, as this can cause malfunctions in the gearbox.
- If the fluid in the transmission is dark brown or black and smells burnt, this indicates severe damage to the transmission.
- If the fluid level is below the lower control mark, then the gearbox must be checked for leaks.
ATF condition
When measuring the fluid level in an automatic transmission, the color and smell of the ATF must be checked at the same time. Based on this, you can judge the state of the drive.
- clear and red: liquid condition is good,
- burnt smell and dark color: burned clutches. The gearbox needs to be replaced.
- solid precipitate (metal shavings) in ATF: the gearbox needs to be replaced.
- resinous and sticky ATF: the gearbox often overheated, it must be disassembled and repaired.
