How often should the oil be changed?
Renault recommends changing the oil for all variants of Renault 19 petrol engines after 10,000 km and for diesel engines every 7,500 km. How exactly should these recommendations be followed?
We believe that a driver who travels frequently over long distances may not comply with these requirements exactly. On the contrary, it is necessary to change the oil more often if the car is operated exclusively in short trips. When operating in urban conditions in winter, regardless of the mileage, it is necessary to change the oil after 4 months.
Seasonal oil changes are essential before and after winter, especially for those Renault 19 owners who do not record mileage between oil changes or use an inexpensive single-component engine oil that is not suitable for the coming season due to its viscosity.
Oil change: where and how?
- The oil change should be done on a warm engine in order to remove all the dirt that appears when the engine is running.
- It is necessary to protect the environment. You should be aware of the consequences of used oil entering the groundwater and the possibility of it poisoning drinking water. Waste oil must be disposed of. This can be done at a gas station, where it is collected in special tanks for used oil.
- Oil changes are more expensive at auto repair shops. In our experience, it is advisable to change only very expensive grades of oils there. In addition, the engine often has time to cool down before the old oil is drained. In some workshops, oil change work must be paid extra.
- At gas stations, in most cases, they immediately begin to change the oil. At the same time, you can choose a cheaper oil from the assortment of a gas station, the price of which already includes the cost of changing it.
- It is also possible to change the oil yourself at a petrol station using an old oil collector. Just remember that the oil filter also changes along with the oil.
- Changing the oil at home is reasonable if the price is significantly lower than the price at a gas station or workshop.
Oil change and oil filter change
The table indicates how much oil you need to buy for various engines:
Engine | 1.4 l | 1.7 l | 1.8 l | 16V | Diesel |
Short designation | C3J | F3N-L/F3N-N | F3P | F7P | F8Q |
With oil filter change | 3,5 | 5,2 | 5,2 | 3,7 | 5,5 |
No oil filter change | 3,0 | 4,7 | 4,7 | 3,2 | 5,0 |
When changing the oil you need:
- new sealing ring for the drain plug;
- new oil filter every 10,000 km (for vehicles with petrol engine) and, accordingly, every 7500 km for a diesel engine.
1. Park the vehicle on a level, level surface.
2. Substitute the cut canister or some other suitable container.
3. Unscrew the drain plug with an 8 mm square wrench. On a diesel engine, first press the protection cover. Drain the oil, but be careful as it is very hot.
If you raised the machine from the front, then to completely drain the used oil, you need to lower the machine and drain the remaining oil. Be careful not to damage or topple the collecting vessel.
4. Unscrew the oil filter with a special tool. It is even better to use a special Haceta filter wrench (Hazet). If the filter sits very tightly, then pierce its body with a sharp screwdriver (be careful, hot oil will come out) and unscrew the filter using a screwdriver as a lever. On a diesel engine, unscrew the oil filter using a SW 27 wrench.
5. Drain the oil from the filter into a collection vessel.
6. Do not throw the used oil filter and oil-stained rags into household waste, but use a special container for the disposal of industrial waste.
7. Check if the thread on which the filter is installed is well filled.
8. Lubricate the O-ring of the new oil filter with a small amount of oil. Do not use used oil.
9. Screw the filter by hand without using any tool.
10. Screw in the drain plug with a new O-ring, but not too much 20 Nm, otherwise damage the thread.
11. After adding oil, let the engine run for a while. Until the oil pump fills the oil filter, the oil pressure warning light will be on. On an older engine, a short bearing knock may be heard. On a 16-valve engine, hydraulic tappets can make a short knock.
12. Check the tightness of the oil filter and drain plug.
13. In this way, a wrench with a tie strap is used to remove the oil filter. If it is impossible to unscrew the filter, it is pierced with a sharp screwdriver and then unscrewed. With some types of replaceable filter elements, it is possible to unscrew the filter housing together with the screw connection.
14. The drain plug is unscrewed with a square wrench (8 mm) counterclock-wise.
