In the gearbox, oil is not consumed as in the engine, but can leak through leaky seals. The gearbox housing, which has an oily dirt coating on the outside, indicates that the oil level needs to be checked. However, if there is too little oil in the gearbox, this will not be visible externally. Therefore, it is necessary to check the oil level regularly.
- Raise the Renault 19 and secure it.
- Unscrew the filler plug.
- If the transmission oil flows out little by little, then the oil level is normal.
- If not, check the oil level.
- If the oil level does not reach more than 5 mm from the edge of the filler hole, you need to add oil.
Note: Recommendation: If you need to check the transmission oil level with sufficient accuracy, you should do this by lowering a piece of soft tubing through the filler neck to the bottom.
Self-refilling of very viscous transmission oil through the hole on the side will require patience. For this, you can use a suitable funnel with a hose or a special syringe.
Choosing the Right Transmission Oil
The gearbox is filled with oil for a long period of time. However, the transmission oil must meet certain requirements. Renault recommends using TRX 80 oil, which corresponds to the viscosity class SAE 80.
