MOT No. 25
In the gearbox, oil is not consumed as in the engine, but can flow out through leaky seals. A gearbox housing that has an oily, muddy coating on the outside indicates that the oil level needs to be checked. At the same time, if there is too little oil in the gearbox, then outwardly this does not manifest itself in any way. Therefore, the oil level must be checked regularly.
- Raise Renault 19 and secure.
- Unscrew the filler plug.
- If the gear oil leaks out a little, then the oil level is normal.
- If not, check the oil level.
- If the oil level does not reach more than 5 mm from the edge of the filler hole, it is necessary to add oil.
Note. Recommendation: if it is necessary to accurately check the gear oil level, this must be done by lowering a piece of soft tube through the filler neck to the bottom.
Do-it-yourself topping up of very viscous gear oil through the hole on the side will require you to be patient. To do this, you can use a suitable funnel with a hose or a special syringe.
Choosing the Right Gear Oil
The gearbox is filled with oil for a long time. However, gear oil must meet certain requirements. Renault recommends the use of TRX 80 oil, which meets the viscosity grade SAE 80.
