- install the car on a flyover or lift;
- cool the engine down to ambient temperature;
- check the components of the system: pipes, suspension elements, clamps, supports, mufflers, catalytic converter;
- check for signs of exhaust gas leakage on traces of soot on the metal;
- check the reliability of fastening brackets and clamps;
- check the elements of the suspension system, especially the rubber elements. Elements of the exhaust system should not come into contact with the elements of the body, they only come into contact through rubber suspensions. If a touch is detected on any element of the exhaust system, first of all, this applies to the catalytic converter, release the elements of its fastening - the elements will fall into place, and then re-tighten their fastening;
- check the condition of the bottom of the body for holes, corrosion, open seams and other defects that can pass exhaust gases into the vehicle interior. Seal the detected leaks with sealant;
- inspect the inside of the exhaust pipe. Blackness and soot indicate improper combustion of fuel.
