1. The exhaust system is checked on a cold engine. For easier inspection, raise the vehicle and support it on axle stands so that all exhaust components are visible and accessible.
2. Check exhaust pipes and connections for signs of leaks, corrosion damage. Make sure all brackets and fasteners are in good condition and that all nuts and bolts are tight. A leak at any of the connections or elsewhere in the system will usually show up as a black sooty spot near the leak.
3. Rattles and other noises are often observed in the exhaust system, especially the bracket and fasteners. Try to move pipes and mufflers. If components come into contact with the body or suspension parts, secure the system with new fasteners. Otherwise separate connections (if it is possible) and wrap the pipes as needed with heat-resistant material to select the play.
