This procedure only applies to engines with an intermediate shaft (talk to Specifications). On engines without an intermediate shaft, there is no oil seal or gasket behind the toothed roller.
1. Remove the gear wheel of the intermediate shaft as described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of the gear wheel of the toothed drive belt and the tension mechanism.
2. Sketch the installation depth of the oil seal, then drill two small holes in it opposite each other. Screw self-tapping screws into them and remove the oil seal with pliers.
On some models it may be necessary to remove the inner lower toothed belt cover. In this case, remove the crankshaft gear and idler pulleys (refer to section Removal, inspection and installation of the gear wheel of the toothed drive belt and the tension mechanism), then unscrew the cover.
3. Clean the gland housing and remove any nicks or burrs with sandpaper that may be causing damage to the gland.
4. Lubricate the sealing lips of the new oil seal and position it on the end of the shaft. Drive the gland into the casing to the previously noted depth. If the shaft surface has been heavily worn out, drive the new oil seal a little deeper into the housing so that the sealing lip rubs against the unworn area of the shaft.
5. Where necessary, install the inner lower toothed belt cover, then install the crankshaft gear and idler pulleys as described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of the gear wheel of the toothed drive belt and the tension mechanism.
6. Establish a gear wheel of an intermediate shaft as it is described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of the gear wheel of the toothed drive belt and the tension mechanism and install a new toothed drive belt as described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of a toothed drive belt.
