Note: This procedure only applies to engines with an intermediate shaft (see Specifications).
1. Remove the intermediate shaft sprocket as described in Chapter 6.
2. Mark the installation depth of the oil seal, then drill two small holes in it opposite each other. Insert a self-tapping screw into each hole and use pliers to remove the seal.
Note: On some models, it may be necessary to remove the lower inner drive belt cover to access the oil seal. In this case, remove the crankshaft sprocket and idler pulley (see Chapter 6), then unscrew the lid.
3. Clean the oil seal housing, use sandpaper to remove burrs and irregularities that may cause damage to the oil seal.
4. Lubricate the sealing lips of the new oil seal and install it on the end of the shaft. Drive the seal into the housing to the depth noted earlier. Please note that if the shaft surface where the seal contacts is heavily worn, the new seal must be inserted a little deeper into the housing.
5. Where necessary, install the inner timing belt cover, then the idler pulley and crankshaft sprocket as described in Chapter 6.

6. Install the intermediate shaft sprocket as described in Chapter 6, and a new toothed drive belt as described in Chapter 5.
