Oil seal on the drive belt side
1. Remove the crankshaft sprocket as described in Chapter 6.
2. Note the correct position of the old oil seal, then use a screwdriver to remove it from the casing. Do not damage the surface of the crankshaft, spacer gasket or oil seal housing.
Note: On some models, it may be necessary to remove the lower inner timing belt cover. In this case, remove the intermediate shaft sprocket/roller and the intermediate pulley itself (see Chapter 6), and then unscrew the lid.
3. Clean the oil seal housing and use emery cloth to remove any burrs or rough spots that may cause damage to the oil seal. Inspect the contact surface with the oil seal on the crankshaft. If it is rough or grooves have formed on it where the old seal was installed, the new seal must be installed at a slightly shallower depth. On early model F8Q 784 engines that have a separate spacer shim at the end of the crankshaft, remove the shim - if it is worn where the old seal was contacting, unfold it and reinstall it so the new seal contacts the unworn area. If the spacer gasket is excessively worn, replace it.
4. Wipe the contact surface with the oil seal, then dip the new oil seal in oil and install it on the crankshaft, with the closed side facing out.
5. Using a pipe of suitable diameter, drive the seal into the casing to the previously marked depth - work very carefully so as not to damage the edges of the seal. On engines with a separate spacer gasket, lubricate it with clean engine oil, then install it on the crankshaft and carefully insert it into the seal.

6. Where necessary, install the lower inner drive belt cover and install the idler pulley and sprocket/roller as described in Chapter 6. Install the crankshaft sprocket as described in Chapter 6, and a new toothed drive belt as described in Chapter 5.
Oil seal housing on the drive belt side
7. Remove the timing belt as described in Chapter 5, the crankshaft and intermediate shaft sprockets or the intermediate pulley, see Chapter 6. Remove the woodruff key from the slot in the crankshaft, then unscrew the lower inner drive belt cover from the cylinder block.
8. Unscrew the bolts securing the oil seal housing to the pan.
9. Remove the mounting bolts and carefully separate the oil seal housing, marking the mounting pins near the two lower bolt holes. If the pan gasket is damaged, the pan must be removed and the gasket replaced. On engines without a countershaft, note the presence of an oil pump drive chain guide and two locating pins. Ensure that the guide is fit for further use and replace it if there is any doubt about its condition. On early model F8Q 784 engines, also note the presence of a separate spacer shim at the end of the crankshaft.
10. The seal should be changed every time the casing is removed. Note the location of the old seal, then use a screwdriver to remove it and clean the bearing surface. Lubricate the outer edge of the new seal and insert it into the housing with the closed side facing out. Place the casing on a block of wood, then use a socket or metal pipe to drive the seal into place.
11. When installing, clean the mating surfaces of the casing, pan and block from sealant. Make sure the chain guide (where it is applied) is installed correctly and the mounting pins are in place in the housing.
12. Apply a bead of sealant with a diameter of 0.6-1.0 mm (Renault recommends CAF 4/60 THIXO or Rhodorseal 5661) onto the surface of the casing gasket, around the inner edges of the bolt holes, and onto the threads of the two bolts (closest to the gland). Make sure the sealant seals the oil channel at the top end of the housing. Install the shroud onto the cylinder block and oil pan, tightening the bolts evenly.
13. Install a separate spacer gasket (where it is applied) as described in step 4 above. On all engines, install the Woodruff key into the slot in the crankshaft, then install the lower inner drive belt cover and securely tighten the mounting bolts.
14. Install the crankshaft and intermediate shaft sprockets, or intermediate pulley. Then install the new timing belt, see Chapters 6 and 5.
Flywheel side oil seal
15. To replace the left crankshaft oil seal, it is necessary to remove the transmission from the engine compartment so that the clutch can be removed (where it is applied) and flywheel/drive disc. Remove the flywheel/drive plate.
16. Use a screwdriver to remove the old oil seal.
17. Inspect the contact surface with the oil seal on the crankshaft. If it is rough or has developed grooves in the area where the seal was in contact, the new seal will need to be installed at a slightly shallower depth.
18. Wipe the contact surface with the oil seal, then dip the new oil seal in oil and place it on the crankshaft with the closed side facing out.
19. Using a metal tube, drive the seal to the previously marked depth.
20. Install the flywheel/drive plate. Install the clutch as described in Section 6, then install the transmission assembly and secure it to the engine.
