Oil seal on the drive belt side

1. Remove the camshaft sprocket as described in Chapter 6.

2. Remove the woodruff key (where available) from the end of the camshaft.

3. Mark the installation depth of the old oil seal, then use a screwdriver to remove it from the cylinder head, without damaging the surface of the camshaft. The seal can be removed in another way. Drill a small hole in it and screw in a screw. Then use pliers to remove the seal (see illustrations).

If this does not work, screw in two screws opposite each other.

4. Wipe the contact surface of the seal in the cylinder head, then dip the new seal in oil and install it on the camshaft with the closed side facing out.

5. Using a pipe of suitable diameter, drive the seal into the casing to the previously marked depth.

6. Install the camshaft sprocket as described in Chapter 6.

Flywheel side oil seal

7. There is no oil seal at the end of the camshaft on the flywheel side. Sealing is provided by a gasket between the cylinder head and the vacuum pump housing, and on some models by an O-ring installed between the pump and the housing. The gasket or O-ring can be replaced by unscrewing the pump from the cylinder head (see Chapter 9).
