Gland from the side of the drive belt
1. Remove the camshaft gear as described in Section Removal from the installation of gear wheels of the drive belt and tension mechanism.
2. Remove the key (where available) from the end of the distributor.
3a. Mark the installation depth of the old oil seal, then use a screwdriver to remove it from the cylinder head, without damaging the camshaft. The seal can be removed in another way. Drill a small hole in it, screw in a self-tapping screw.
3b. Remove the seal with pliers (refer to illustrations). If this fails, screw in the second self-tapping screw.
4. Wipe the oil seal contact surface in the cylinder head, then dip the new oil seal in oil and install it on the camshaft with the closed side out.
5. Using a tube of suitable diameter, drive the stuffing box into the casing to the previously marked depth.
6. Install the camshaft gear as described in Section Removal from the installation of gear wheels of the drive belt and tension mechanism.
Flywheel side seal
1. There is no oil seal on the flywheel end of the camshaft. The seal is provided by a gasket between the cylinder head and the vacuum pump casing, or on some models by an O-ring installed between the pump and the casing. The gasket or o-ring can be replaced by removing the pump from the motor (contact the head Brake system).
