Note. When installing, use a new toothed drive belt.
Removing
1. Remove the toothed drive belt as described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of a toothed drive belt.
Camshaft gear
1. Loosen the pulley bolt and remove the bolt with washer. A special tool is required to prevent the pulley from rotating. In the absence of any of the Renault special tools mentioned here, an acceptable replacement can be made as follows: Take two steel plates (long and short) and three pairs of nuts and bolts; one nut with a bolt will be the rotary axis of the bifurcated grip, and the remaining two pairs of nuts and bolts are wrapped at the ends "forks". They must fit into the holes in the pulley. The pulley can also be held using an old toothed drive belt and pliers (refer to accompanying illustration).
2. After unscrewing the mounting bolt, pull off the pulley and remove the segment key - note that on late model engines, the key is part of the pulley. Inspect the oil seal for oil leaks and, if necessary, replace it as described in Section Replacing the camshaft seals.
Intermediate shaft gear
1. On engines with an intermediate shaft (talk to Specifications), remove the gear wheel bolt while holding the pulley with the old timing belt and pliers, then remove the pulley. Note that on some engines the segment key is part of the pulley. On engines without an intermediate shaft (talk to Specifications), unscrew the bolt and remove the pulley.
Crankshaft gear
1. By unscrewing the crankshaft pulley bolt and removing the pulley and toothed drive belt as described above, you can remove the gear from the crankshaft trunnion (refer to accompanying illustration). If necessary, remove the segment key from the slot in the crankshaft. Inspect the oil seal for oil leaks and, if necessary, replace it as described in Section Replacement of crankshaft oil seals.
Tensioner pulley
1. Remove the large nut and mounting bolt and remove the tensioner assembly.
Intermediate pulley
1. Remove the bolts securing the intermediate pulley shield to the cylinder block and remove the pulley assembly.
Inspection
1. Inspect the gear teeth for nicks or other damage. The teeth are wear resistant and should not wear out over the life of the engine.
2. Turn the tensioner and intermediate pulley by hand and check that they turn freely. Do not attempt to clean them with solvent as it may get into the bearings. If there is wear, replace the tensioner and/or idler pulley as needed.
Installation
Camshaft gear
1. Insert the key into the slot in the camshaft, install the pulley, make sure the key fits into the slot.
2. Install the pulley mounting bolt and tighten it to the Specifications effort.
3. Install a new toothed drive belt as described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of a toothed drive belt.
Intermediate shaft gear
1. On engines with an intermediate shaft (talk to Specifications), install the slotted key (where available) on the shaft, put on the gear wheel. Install the gear wheel mounting bolt and tighten it to the Specifications effort.
2. On engines without an intermediate shaft (talk to Specifications), install the roller and securely tighten the mounting bolt.
3. Install a new toothed drive belt as described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of a toothed drive belt.
Crankshaft gear
1. Install the slotted key in the slot of the crankshaft and fit the pulley.
2. Install a new toothed drive belt as described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of a toothed drive belt.
Tensioner pulley
1. Install the tensioner on the column and tighten the fixing nut and bolt.
2. Install a new toothed drive belt as described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of a toothed drive belt.
Intermediate pulley
1. Install the intermediate pulley on the cylinder block and securely tighten the mounting bolts.
2. Install a new toothed drive belt as described in Section Removal, inspection and installation of a toothed drive belt.
