Removal and installation the power steering pump (Renault Symbol 1)

Removal procedure:
  • disconnect the negative battery cable;
  • raise the front of the car and place safety supports under the body;
  • remove the right front wheel and mudguard;
  • remove the accessory drive belt (see section "Car maintenance");
  • clamp the supply hose with a clamp, installing it as close to the pump as possible to reduce the leakage of working fluid;

  • loosen the clamp on the hose and disconnect the hose from the back of the pump (Fig. 6.22);
  • loosen the connection nipple and remove the high-pressure pipeline from the pump, take measures to prevent the working fluid from getting onto the generator;
  • disconnect the power steering pressure sensor connector;
  • unscrew the three bolts securing the pump pulley;
  • disconnect the pipeline from the fuel rail;
  • unscrew the three bolts securing the pump to the bracket and remove the pump.

Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal. Please note the following:
  • replace the sealing ring of the high pressure pipe fitting with a new one;
  • install a new worm clamp on the supply hose;
  • add working fluid to the reserve tank and, while the engine is running, remove air from the power steering system by turning the steering wheel from one extreme position to the other. If necessary, add working fluid to the reserve tank.
