There are two types of fastening of steering tips to steering rods used on a car: using a clamp with a tie bolt (Fig. 6.23) and using a lock nut (Fig. 6.24).
Removal procedure:
- raise the front of the car and place safety supports under the body;
- remove the wheel from the desired side;
- if the tip is to be reused, mark its position on the threaded part of the steering rod in an accessible way;
- holding the tip, unscrew the clamp tightening bolt or lock nut;
- unscrew the nut securing the tip to the steering knuckle;

- using a puller, press the tip out of the steering knuckle (Fig. 6.25); if you intend to reuse the tip, screw a nut onto the tip pin thread before using the puller;
- unscrew the tip from the steering rod. If a lock nut is used, count the number of threads on the rod, starting from the lock nut to the end of the tip (at the moment of its descent from the draft). If a tie rod clamp is used, count the number of turns of the end until it comes off the steering rod;
- the tip must be replaced without fail if the pin moves too tightly or too freely in the hinge, the protective cover is torn or damaged, or the thread or conical part of the pin is worn.
Installation procedure:
- screw the lock nut onto the threaded part of the steering rod so that there is the previously counted number of thread turns in front of the nut. Screw the tip onto the steering rod and tighten the lock nut. If a tip with a clamp is used, screw it into the threaded part of the clamp by the same number of turns that were counted when removing it. Tighten the clamp bolt;
- insert the tip pin into the corresponding hole in the steering knuckle and tighten the fastening nut to the specified torque;
- lower the vehicle and adjust the wheel alignment.
