Removing
1. The speedometer drive can be removed after removing the main gear protective cover from the rear of the transmission.
2. Engage the handbrake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on axle stands. Where available, remove the lower engine cover.
3. Remove the air filter assembly as described in Chapter Power systems, release.
4. Disconnect the wiring and turn out the vehicle speed sensor from the upper wall of the transmission.
5. Place a suitable container under the final drive cover to catch the fluid that will be released when the protective cover is removed.
6. Turn away bolts of fastening and remove a cover of the main transfer. Remove the pad.
7. Turn out a casing of the mechanism of a drive of a speedometer from the top wall of transmission, then disconnect and take the mechanism. Remove the sealing ring.
Installation
1. Install a new O-ring into the drive mechanism housing and insert the housing into the transmission. Attach the wire to the casing with staples and bring the casing into working position.
2. Clean and dry mating surfaces of cover and transmission and install cover using a new gasket. Install the cover bolts and tighten them securely.
3. Install the vehicle speed sensor and connect the wiring.
4. Fill the final drive unit with the type and amount of oil specified in the Specifications (refer to section Schedule of ongoing maintenance and Specifications Chapter Maintenance) through the filler/inspection port located on the right end of the transmission (refer to accompanying illustration). Pour in oil until the level reaches the bottom edge of the hole. Install the plug, tighten it and lower the vehicle to the ground.
5. Take a short drive in your car. Upon your return, park your car on level ground (not slanted) and check the oil level in the final drive (contact the head Maintenance).
