1. Remove the flywheel/drive plate assembly.
2. Using a small screwdriver, remove the old oil seal from its socket (take care not to damage the surface of the crankshaft trunnion). Alternatively, drill two small holes in the end surface of the oil seal, screw in the screws and remove the oil seal by grasping the protruding screw heads with tongs.
3. Visually assess the condition of the sealing surface of the crankshaft trunnion. If there is a wear, the new seal must be seated at a slightly shallower depth during installation, outside the wear area.
4. Wipe the sealing surfaces with a clean rag, then dip the new oil seal in clean engine oil and carefully place it on the shaft journal (closed side out -- see accompanying illustration). Take care not to damage the lips of the stuffing box when putting it on the shaft trunnion.
5. Using a piece of metal pipe of a suitable diameter as a mandrel, or a wooden block of the appropriate shape, plant the gland perpendicularly into its socket, flush with the cut of the latter.
6. Reinstall the flywheel/drive plate assembly.
