Pic. 12.7. Front brake caliper repair: A - use of compressed air to squeeze the piston out of the caliper cylinder; B - removing the piston sealing ring from the caliper cylinder
- Remove the front brake caliper.
- Clean the caliper from dust and dirt, do not inhale the rising dust.
- Secure the caliper in a vice with soft metal plates on the jaws.
- Remove the GIRLING retaining ring and dust cover from the piston.
- Remove the piston from the caliper by supplying air under low pressure into the brake cylinder through the hole for connecting the brake hose, installing a wooden block instead of the brake pads, since the presence of signs of damage on the piston skirt makes it unsuitable for further use.
- Remove the wooden block and carefully remove the piston. Carefully remove the rectangular seal from the caliper cylinder groove to avoid damaging the cylinder walls.
- Wash all parts in methyl alcohol or clean brake fluid and wipe them. Blow out the tubes and holes with compressed air.
- Check the condition of all caliper parts and replace worn or damaged parts. Pay special attention to the cylinder and piston. If there are scratches, marks, wear or pitting, the piston and cylinder must be replaced. Regardless of condition, replace all rubber seals.
- Before assembling the caliper, lubricate the piston seal, piston and cylinder with brake fluid.
- Assembly is carried out in the reverse order of disassembly.
- After installing the caliper, bleed air from the brake system circuit where the brake hose was disconnected from the caliper.
