Only if from the cooling system (the picture shows a 1.4-liter engine) air is completely removed through air purgers (shown by arrows), the cooling system will work without overheating. Depending on the modification of Renault 19, air purgers are located differently: on the radiator or additionally on the coolant hoses.
1. Release excess pressure through the expansion tank cap by gradually turning it to avoid scalding from hot coolant. Place a thick rag on the expansion tank cap on a hot engine.
2. Place a clean container under the radiator and disconnect the lower radiator hose.
3. To allow the coolant to drain better, remove the expansion tank cap.
4. Drain the coolant into a closed container.
Note: Recommendation: To drain harmful coolant residue from the engine water jacket, unscrew the drain plug located in the engine between the coolant pump and the timing cover (type "C" engine) or in the crankcase wall under the exhaust manifold at the height of the intermediate shaft (type "F" engine).
Filling with coolant
Since when draining the coolant, some of it remains in the lower radiator hose and the drain plug in the housing, the amount of coolant required for filling may be slightly less than that indicated in table.
1. Screw in the drain plug with a new gasket and tighten it.
2. Place the lower radiator hose onto the connecting pipe and tighten it with a clamp.
3. Unscrew the air separator on the radiator tank and heating system (engine type "C"); in diesel engines, on the upper radiator hose and, accordingly, in the heating system.
4. Fill the coolant through the expansion tank neck.
5. When adding new coolant, first add the appropriate amount of antifreeze additive for your Renault 19 to the cooling system.
6. Then fill the system with soft, clean water to prevent scale formation until air bubbles stop coming out.
7. Once the coolant starts to flow out of the air separator, close it.
8. Start the engine and add coolant at idle speed until its level reaches the "MAXI" mark and stops decreasing.
9. Tighten the expansion tank cap.
10. Warm up the engine until the thermostat opens. It is open if the reservoir and radiator cooling fins are warm to the touch when the engine is off.
11. When the engine is running, the cooling system automatically removes air, so after the engine has cooled down, it is necessary to add a little coolant.
Replacing cooling system hoses
For replacement, use only original manufacturer hoses and new hose clamps. Purchase clamps that tighten using threads.

1. Drain the coolant into a clean container.
2. Loosen the clamps and remove the hoses.
3. Loosen tightly seated hoses with a twisting motion and then carefully remove.
4. Place the new hoses far enough onto the fittings so that they cannot slip off.
5. Put on the threaded clamps.
Note: Recommendation: It is difficult to replace a leaky coolant hose with a new one on the road. Instead, you can use "emergency tape" from Weyer, Dusseldorf (Weyer) or Holts bandage (Holts). Both of these products stick well to the clean and dry surface of the rubber hose. In doing so, slightly unscrew the expansion tank cap.
