Only if from the cooling system (pictured 1.4 liter engine) air is completely removed through air separators (shown by arrows), the cooling system will work without overheating. Depending on the Renault 19 modification, the air separators are located differently: on the radiator or additionally on the coolant hoses.
1. Relieve excess pressure through the expansion tank cap by gradually turning it to avoid burns from hot coolant. Place a thick rag on the cap of the expansion tank when the engine is hot.
2. Place a clean container under the radiator and disconnect the lower radiator hose.
3. In order for the coolant to flow out better, remove the expansion tank cap.
4. Drain the coolant into a closed container.
Note. Recommendation: To drain harmful coolant residue from the engine water jacket, unscrew the drain plug located in the engine between the coolant pump and the timing cover (engine type «WITH») or in the crankcase wall under the exhaust manifold at the height of the intermediate shaft (engine type «F»).
Coolant fill
Since, when draining the coolant, some of it remains in the lower radiator hose and drain plug in the housing, the amount of coolant required for filling may be slightly less than indicated in table.
1. Screw in the drain plug with a new gasket and tighten it.
2. Put the lower radiator hose on the connecting pipe and tighten it with a clamp.
3. Unscrew the air separator on the radiator tank and heating system (engine type «WITH»); in a diesel engine on the upper radiator hose and, accordingly, in the heating system.
4. Fill in a cooling liquid through a mouth of a broad tank.
5. When filling in new coolant, first pour into the cooling system the appropriate amount of antifreeze additive for your Renault 19.
6. Then fill the system with soft, clean water to prevent scale formation until no more air bubbles come out.
7. As soon as the coolant begins to flow out of the air separator, close it.
8. Start the engine and at idle add coolant until its level reaches the mark «MAXI» and stop falling.
9. Screw on the cap of the expansion tank.
10. Warm up the engine until the thermostat opens. It is open when the reservoirs and radiator cooling plates are warm to the touch with the engine off.
11. When the engine is running, the cooling system automatically removes air, so after the engine has cooled down, some coolant must be added.
Replacing the cooling system hoses
For replacement, use only original hoses from the manufacturer and new hose clamps. Purchase clamps that are tightened with threads.
1. Drain the coolant into a clean container.
2. Loosen clamps, remove hoses.
3. Loosen tightly seated hoses with a twisting motion and then carefully remove.
4. Push the new hoses deep enough into the fittings so that they cannot slip off.
5. Put on the threaded collars.
Note. Recommendation: It is difficult to replace a leaking coolant hose with a new one on the road. Instead, you can use «emergency tape» from Weyer, Düsseldorf (Weyer) or Holts bandage (Holts). Both of these products adhere well to the cleaned and dry surface of the rubber hose. At the same time, slightly unscrew the cap of the expansion tank.
