Steering column: 1 - steering shaft; 2 - lever for adjusting the position of the steering column; 3 - steering column; 4 - upper cardan joint of the intermediate shaft; 5 - intermediate shaft; 6 - lower cardan joint of the intermediate shaft; 7 - intermediate shaft seal; 8 - steering column mounting bracket; 9 - mechanism for adjusting the position of the steering column
Attention! Airbag models. Do not place airbag units (driver or passenger) near a source of heat or an open flame: the risk of spontaneous explosion of the device.
Tightening torques:
- Steering shaft universal joint bolt - 25 Nm
- Steering wheel bolt - 45 Nm
- Steering column support nuts - 20 Nm
- Airbag block bolts - 5 Nm
A steering column with two cardan joints is installed on some cars. Removing such a steering column has some features.
Removing the casing (decorative panel) steering column
Turn out three screws of fastening of a casing of a steering column.
Remove the bottom and top of the casing
Removing the steering column
1. Disconnect the battery.
Models without airbag
2. Release from clips an overlay of a steering wheel.
Models with airbag
3. Turn away two bolts of fastening of the module of an airbag (bottom of steering wheel) and disconnect the connector (D) module. The connector has a self-explosion prevention device built into it: always disconnect the connector when removing the airbag module.
4. Turn away a bolt of fastening of a steering wheel.
5. Set the steered wheels to the straight ahead position and remove the steering wheel.
6. Turn away bolts of fastening of casings of a steering column (three jokes) and remove covers.
7. Disconnect the wiper/washer switch connector and airbag current collector.
8. Mark the relative position on the halves of the current collector body. Make sure the wheels are in the straight ahead position, the slip ring connector is in the center of the steering wheel, and the mark "ABOUT" on the current collector is located opposite the benchmark "E".

9. Remove the bolt (WITH). Use a flat screwdriver to press the cone lock and remove the current collector.
10. Remove the side trim of the windshield pillars: press the clip (1) and pull out the cover (2) from the bottom support.
Figure 6.10. Removing the windshield pillar trim: 1 - clip; 2 - overlay
11. Turn away two lateral screws of fastening of the top overlay of the forward panel.
12. Turn away three top screws of fastening of the top overlay of the forward panel. Remove the top trim in the direction of the arrows shown in the illustrations.
13. Remove the immobilizer signal receiver.
14. Turn away six bolts of fastening of the block of devices. Disconnect the four connectors and remove the instrument panel.
15. Disconnect the steering column connector.
16. In the engine compartment:
- Disconnect the intake duct.
- Turn away nuts of fastening of a broad tank, remove a tank for access to the steering shaft hinge.
17. Unscrew and remove the eccentric bolt of the terminal connection of the universal joint yoke of the steering folding telescopic shaft, marking the relative position of the splined parts;
18. Turn away from a steering column on two bolts and one screw of fastening of a cover, pull out a cover from a partition of a motor compartment.
19. Remove the steering column.
Steering column installation
1. Install the steering column.
2. Install the column cover into the bulkhead of the engine compartment. Tie up the legs of the cover and the universal joint with a plastic clamp, as shown in the figure.
Figure 6.17. Pass a plastic clamp through the holes in the protective cover (or whip), to install the cover on the motor shield
- tie the protective boot valves and the steering shaft universal joint yoke with twine (see Figure 6.17), push it into the opening of the motor shield;
Figure 6.21. Installing the protective cover of the folding steering shaft in the engine compartment
- cut the string connecting the boot valves and the universal joint yoke, and install the boot on the bulkhead motor shield (Figure 6.21);
- install, without tightening, the eccentric bolt of the terminal connection of the universal joint fork;
- pulling up, put the spline of the folding shaft on the steering column;
- by turning the steering wheel, achieve free access to the bolt of the upper fastening of the folding shaft, then screw in the bolt;
- tighten the bolt of the upper fastening of the folding shaft to the specified moment, having previously lubricated its threaded part with a composition that prevents spontaneous unscrewing;
- orient the steering column along the wheels of the car and according to the mark on the steering wheel;
- tighten the eccentric bolt of the terminal connection of the universal joint yoke to the specified torque;
- install the air duct, the central electronic switching unit, the headlight corrector knob holder, the fuse box cover, the front pillar upholstery, the left door seal, the hood lock drive handle;
- check and, if necessary, adjust the toe-in of the front wheels.
Special Installation Instructions
- A) The steered wheels must be in the straight ahead position.
- b) When installing the current collector of the airbag module, the label "ABOUT" must be aligned with the benchmark "E".
- V) Do not tighten the bolt (WITH) before installing the steering column covers. For bolt tightening (WITH) cut an access hole in the bottom casing.
- G) Do not reinstall the steering wheel mounting bolt. Bolt tightening torque 45 Nm.
Attention! Before connecting the airbag module, check the passive safety system:
- Turn the ignition on and check. that the SRS indicator light is on.
- Connect the pillow connector: the indicator should turn off.
- Turn off the ignition, install the airbag module in place. Tighten the mounting bolts to 5 Nm.
- Turn the ignition on: the indicator should come on and go out after about three seconds.
If there are deviations from the description of the operation of the indicator, carry out troubleshooting in the passive safety system, see the appropriate section. Failure to check the system may result in an accident.
