On a car, two types of fastening of steering tips to steering rods are used: using a clamp with a coupling bolt (Figure 6.23) and by means of a locknut (Figure 6.24).
Removing
- raise the front of the car and install safety supports under the body;
- remove the wheel from the desired side;
- if the tip is to be reused, mark in an accessible way its position on the threaded part of the steering rod;
- while holding the tip, unscrew the clamp coupling bolt or locknut;
- unscrew the nut securing the tip to the steering knuckle;
Figure 6.25. Detachment of a finger of a steering tip from a rotary fist by means of a puller
- using a puller, press the tip out of the steering knuckle (Figure 6.25); if the tip is to be reused, then screw the nut onto the thread of the tip pin before using the puller;
- unscrew the tip from the steering rod. If a locknut is used, count the number of threads on the rod, starting from the locknut to the end of the tip (at the time of his departure from traction). If a tie-down collar is used, count the number of turns of the tip before it leaves the tie rod;
- the tip is subject to unconditional replacement in case of tight or excessively free movement of the finger in the hinge, rupture or damage to the protective cover, wear of the thread or conical part of the finger.
Installation
- screw a locknut onto the threaded part of the steering rod so that the previously counted number of threads is in front of the nut. Screw the tip onto the tie rod and tighten the lock nut. If a ferrule with a clamp is used, screw it into the threaded part of the clamp by the same number of turns as counted during removal. Tighten the clamp bolt;
- insert the tip finger into the corresponding hole in the steering knuckle and tighten the fastening nut to the specified torque;
- lower the vehicle and adjust the wheel alignment.
