Removing
1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery.
Attention! If the radio in your car is coded, make sure you know the code before disconnecting the battery.
Petrol engine models
1. Remove a casing of the air filter as it is described in the Head Power and exhaust systems.
2. Engage the handbrake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on axle stands. Remove the engine crankcase guard.
3. Where available, disconnect and remove the bracket from the rear of the starter. On models with the F7R engine, it will also be necessary to remove the shield for the optional exhaust bracket and fuel line.
4. Turn away a nut and disconnect the main cable from the traction relay of a starter.
5. Disconnect the control wire of the traction relay from the terminal (refer to accompanying illustration).
6a. Loosen and remove the three bolts securing the starter motor to the transmission case.
6b. Mark the location of the bracket.
6c. Then remove the starter (refer to illustrations).
Diesel Models (without turbocharger)
1. Remove a casing of the air filter as it is described in the Head Power and exhaust systems.
2. Engage the handbrake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on axle stands. Remove the engine crankcase guard.
3. Turn away screws of fastening and a nut, then remove a protective cover from a starter.
4. Disconnect the wiring connector from the starter traction relay, then unscrew the fixing nut and disconnect the main supply cable from the traction relay.
5. Turn away fixing nuts and bolts, then remove an arm of back fastening of a starter.
6. Loosen and remove the three bolts securing the starter to the transmission case and remove it from the engine compartment. Remove the dowel pin that is installed in the rear mounting bolt hole.
Diesel Models (with turbocharger)
1. Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on axle stands. Remove the right front wheel and engine guard.
2. Loosen the mounting brackets and remove the air pipe system connecting the intake manifold to the intercooler.
3. In the same way, remove the pipe system connecting the intake manifold to the intermediate intercooler.
4. Remove a reception pipe as it is described in the Head Power and exhaust systems.
5. On models equipped with the F9Q engine, remove the two props at the rear of the starter.
6. Remove the three bolts securing the starter to the gearbox clutch housing.
7. On most models, to remove the starter, proceed as follows.
8. Working under the right side of the vehicle, use a punch to drive out the roll pin securing the drive shaft to the differential gear shaft.
9. Loosen the two nuts and bolts securing the right knuckle fastener to the suspension strut. Remove the top nut and bolt, but do not remove the bottom nut and bolt.
10. Pull the top of the steering knuckle retainer out until the inner end of the drive shaft disengages from the differential shaft. Suspend the drive shaft using twine or wire - do not let it hang under its own weight.
11. As necessary, move the drive shaft to gain access to the two nuts, fasten the turbocharger oil return line to the cylinder block.
12. Turn away two fixing nuts and disconnect a return oil pipeline of a turbocharger from the block of cylinders. Remove the gasket. Plug the holes in the cylinder block to prevent dirt from entering.
13. Remove the nut securing the wiring harness to the base of the starter rear mounting bracket, then disconnect the wiring harness from the starter.
14. Remove the bolt securing the turbocharger bracket to the starter rear bracket (note that the bolt also secures the heat shield). Loosen the nut and bolt securing the bracket to the turbocharger.
15. Remove the nuts and bolts securing the starter rear mounting bracket to the engine and starter.
16. Remove the remaining bolt securing the heat shield.
17. Remove starter, rear mount bracket and heat shield while working under vehicle. Follow that. not to drop the starter.
Installation
1. Install in the reverse order, but tighten the fixing bolts to the torque given in the Specifications.
