Petrol models
1. Remove the spark plugs, turn off the engine management system (remove the fuse "M" protection from the fuse box in the engine compartment, note that this fuse also supplies power to the emergency seat belt tensioner and airbag systems, so see the notes and warnings in Section Front seat belt pretensioning system - general information and Section Airbag system - general information and precautions and Removal and installation of airbag components). Turn the engine over with the starter until the oil pressure warning light goes out.
2. Install spark plugs and fuse.
3. Start the engine, bearing in mind that this may take a little longer than usual.
4. Inspect the idling engine for fuel, water, and oil leaks. When starting for the first time, smoke and a burning smell may appear due to the grease burning out.
5. Let the engine idle until hot water flows through the top hose, then shut it off.
6. After waiting a few minutes, recheck the oil and coolant levels and top up as needed (see Schedule of ongoing maintenance).
7. On all engines except F7R, it is not necessary to re-tighten the cylinder head bolts.
8. If new pistons, rings or crankshaft bearings have been installed, the engine needs a break-in. For the first 800 km, do not turn on full throttle and do not overload it at low speeds. After running in, it is recommended to change the oil and filter.
Diesel models
1. Fill the fuel system as described in Chapter Power and exhaust systems.
2. On models with a turbocharger, prime the lubrication system by disconnecting the fuel shut-off valve from the fuel pump and cranking the engine with the starter for 10 seconds with pauses of 30 seconds. Finally, connect the fuel cut-off valve (check that the oil pressure warning light comes on when the starter is turned on).
3. Press the gas pedal all the way, turn the key in the ignition switch to the position "M" and wait until the heating control lamp goes out.
4. Start the engine.
5. Once the engine is running, keep it at fast idle. See that the oil pressure warning light goes out, then check that there are no oil, fuel or coolant leaks. Where applicable, check power steering couplings.
6. Keep the engine idling until you feel hot coolant flowing through the upper radiator hose, indicating normal operating temperature has been reached. Then turn off the engine and let it cool down.
7. Recheck oil and coolant levels and top up if necessary (see Schedule of ongoing maintenance).
8. Check up the moment of injection and turns of idling as it is described in the Head Power and exhaust systems.
9. On models with a turbocharger, tighten the cylinder head bolts to final torque after the engine has warmed up to normal operating temperature (the cooling fan should turn on), and then waiting at least 2 hours for it to cool down.
10. If new pistons, rings or crankshaft bearings have been installed, the engine needs a break-in. For the first 800 km, do not turn on full throttle and do not overload it at low speeds. After running in, it is recommended to change the oil and filter.
