Petrol models
2. Remove the spark plugs. On models with a distributor, disable the ignition system by disconnecting the ignition coil high-tension lead from the distributor cap and grounding it to the cylinder block. Use a jumper wire or similar to ensure a good connection. On models with a static ignition system (without distributor) disable the system by disconnecting the low voltage connector from the high voltage ignition coil.
3. Crank the engine with the starter until the oil pressure warning light comes on. Install the spark plugs and connect the high-voltage wires to them. Reconnect all previously disconnected wires (item 2).
Diesel models
4. Disconnect the wiring from the fuel shut-off valve on the fuel pump, then crank the engine with the starter until the oil pressure warning light comes on. Connect the wire to the fuel shut-off valve.
5. Bleed the fuel system.
6. Press the gas pedal all the way down, turn the ignition key and wait until the heating indicator lamp comes on.

All models
7. Start the engine, remembering that this will take a little longer than usual, as the fuel system components will initially be empty.
8. With the engine idling, check for signs of fuel, oil or coolant leaks. Do not be alarmed if there is a burning smell or smoke coming from the components heating up in the engine compartment - this is a consequence of the oil and assembly grease burning off. If the hydraulic tappets were removed during the engine repair, the noise level of the valve mechanism will be slightly increased at first, but after the oil has fully circulated in the engine and the pressure has risen to normal, the noise intensity should decrease to normal.
9. Run the engine at idle speed until the upper radiator hose becomes hot to the touch, check that the engine idles smoothly and revs normally, then turn off the engine.
10. After a few minutes, check the oil and coolant levels again and top up if necessary.
11. If the cylinder head mounting bolts were tightened according to the diagram suggested in the Manual, there is no need to check their tightening force at this stage.
12. If during the overhaul individual components such as pistons, piston rings or crankshaft bearings were replaced, the engine should be run in for the first 800 km. At the same time, do not overload it by driving with the throttle fully open or driving in low gear. After the run in is complete, it is recommended to replace the engine oil and oil filter.
