Engine — starting after overhaul (Renault Clio 1)

1. Recheck the engine oil and coolant levels. Make sure you have connected all wires and hoses and have not left any tools or rags in the engine compartment.

2. Remove the spark plugs, disable the ignition system by disconnecting the low tension wire from the ignition control unit or from the ignition coil (or disconnect the wiring from the electronic ignition module on D-series engines). Crank the engine with the starter until the oil pressure warning light goes out.

3. Install the spark plugs and reconnect all electrical wiring.

4. Start the engine, keeping in mind that it may take a little longer than usual.

5. Inspect the idling engine for fuel, water and oil leaks. When first started, smoke and a burning smell may appear due to the burning of the lubricant.

6. Let the engine idle until hot water flows through the top hose, then turn it off.

7. After waiting a few minutes, recheck the oil and coolant levels and top them up as needed.

8. On D-, E- and F-series engines, there is no need to re-tighten the cylinder head bolts. On a C-series engine, the bolts must be retorqued as described in Part A of this Section.

9. If new pistons, rings or crankshaft bearings have been installed, the engine needs to be broken in. For the first 800 km of driving, do not apply full throttle or overload it at low speeds. After running in, it is recommended to change the oil and filter.
