All models covered in this Manual are equipped with a supplemental restraint system (SRS), better known as airbags. Two airbags are included in the mandatory package. The system provides additional protection for the driver and front passenger of the vehicle in the event of a severe frontal collision. If the vehicle is equipped with a driver's airbag, a warning label in the form of the inscription AIRBAG is applied to the central steering wheel pad, under which the airbag module is located. If the vehicle is equipped with a front passenger airbag, a similar inscription is also placed on the right side of the instrument panel. The system consists of an SRS control unit with a built-in directional overload sensor and airbag modules equipped with gas generators. An SRS warning lamp is installed in the instrument panel.

The system is activated during severe frontal impacts when the resulting axial overload exceeds a certain set value. The cushion is filled with gas in milliseconds, completely filling the space between the chest and head of the driver/front passenger and the steering wheel/instrument panel, which significantly reduces the risk of injury to people. At the same time, the SRS control unit issues a command to activate the front seat belt tensioners (see Chapter Body). The gas is released from the cushions almost immediately after they are filled.

Each time the ignition is turned on, the SRS warning light in the vehicle's instrument cluster briefly lights up. While the light remains on, (about 3 seconds) the control unit has time to receive the necessary information from the self-diagnostic device. If no faults are detected, the lamp goes out, otherwise, and also if the lamp is triggered while driving, the car should be driven to a Renault service station for system diagnostics and necessary repairs.

Precautionary measures

Warning! Before performing any airbag maintenance work, disconnect the battery and deactivate the SRS system to avoid injury from accidental deployment of the modules. To deactivate the system, remove the SRS fuse from the mounting block. You can only start performing work after at least five minutes have passed since removing the fuse - this time should be enough for the reserve capacities in the control unit to discharge. When connecting the battery, make sure that no one is in the car. A test ignition should be turned on from outside the car through the open driver's door.

Important! Remember that airbag modules must not be exposed to high temperatures. When removing airbags, always place them face up to avoid accidental activation of the gas generator.

Warning! Do not allow airbag modules to come into contact with any type of solvent. Use only a damp cloth to wipe components.

Caution! Both the airbag modules and the SRS control unit are sensitive to impact. Avoid dropping system components, as they will need to be replaced.

Caution: Before using arc welding on the vehicle, disconnect the wiring harness from the SRS control module.
