Models with 1.4 and 1.6 l petrol engine



Removal



1. Drain the cooling system.

2. Remove the toothed drive belt (see Chapter Engine repair).

3. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the pump assembly from the engine. Note the location of the pump mounting pins and remove them if they are loose.

Installation



Installation


1a. Clean and dry the contact surfaces of the pump and cylinder block.

1b. Then apply a layer of sealant to the sealing surface of the pump (Renault recommends using Lostite 518) thickness 0.6 - 1.0 mm (refer to the accompanying illustration).

2. Make sure the dowel pins are each in place, then move the pump into position. Install the pump bolts and tighten them securely.



3. Install the toothed drive belt (refer to Chapter Engine repair).

4. Fill the cooling system.

Models with 2.0L petrol engine



Removal



1. Drain the cooling system.

2. Jack up the front of the car and place it on axle stands. Remove the right front wheel and its wheel arch liner

3. Loosen the three water pump pulley mounting bolts, then remove the accessory drive belt as described in Chapter Maintenance (refer to the accompanying illustration).

4. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the pump pulley.

5. Loosen the bolts securing the pump to the cylinder block and remove the pump from the block (refer to the accompanying illustration). If the pump does not come off, tap it with a mallet. Remove the gasket.

Installation



1. Begin installation by thoroughly cleaning the mating surfaces of the pump and cylinder block.

2. Perform installation in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
  • a) Use a new pump gasket.
  • b) Install and tension the auxiliary drive belt as described in Chapter Maintenance.
  • c) Finally, fill the cooling system (Chapter Maintenance).

Diesel models



Removal



1. Remove the auxiliary drive belt (Chapter Maintenance), having first loosened the water pump pulley mounting bolts.

2. Drain the cooling system (refer to Chapter Maintenance).

4b. Then remove the water pump from the working position (refer to the illustrations). Note the location of the pump mounting pins and remove them if they are loose. Remove the pump gasket - it must be replaced.

Installation



1. Clean and dry the mating surfaces of the pump, casing and cylinder block and place the dowel pins each in their original position.

2. Place a new gasket and install the pump assembly. Tighten the mounting bolts.

3. Install the water pump pulley, then the drive belt and tension it as described in Chapter Maintenance. Tighten the pulley mounting bolts.
