Description of the engine start interlock system

In this system, the engine start immobilizer is activated a few seconds after the ignition is turned off (this is accompanied by the flashing of the red warning light of the electronic engine immobilizer system and the locking of the electric steering column lock).

The system includes:
  • two Renault A cards, with specially coded electronic circuits for controlling the engine start blocking system;
  • only one of the Renault cards can be equipped with the "hands-free" function;
  • you can also register two additional cards (but not more than four);
  • engine immobilizer receiver located in reader B and equipped with an electronic circuit for transmitting the Renault card code to the UEC C;
  • The UCH is located under the instrument panel on the driver's side.

Note: The Renault card reader is not coded.

To block the engine start, the UEC provides the following functions:
  • decoding the Renault card signal coming from the reader;
  • control of the engine start immobilizer system by transmitting a code to the electric steering column lock;
  • communication with injection ECU;
  • control of switching on and off the red signal lamp of the electronic engine start immobilizer system and the backlight lamp of the reading device;
  • communication with diagnostic device;
  • The red indicator lamp of the electronic engine start immobilizer system D, located on the instrument panel, serves to indicate:
  • activation of the electronic engine start immobilizer system;
  • renault card mismatch;
  • system failure;
  • injection ECU or electric steering column lock malfunctions;
  • Injection ECU with entered code E;
  • g-sensor diagnostic connector used for troubleshooting and system setup;
  • electric steering column lock with entered code F;
  • clutch pedal and gearshift lever position sensors I and engine start button H to supply power to the starter.

Operating principle

When the electronic engine immobilizer system is activated, the red indicator lamp of the system flashes (slowly, one flash per second). The electric steering column lock is locked.

Once the Renault card is inserted into the reader, the card code is transmitted to the UEC.

If the code is recognised by the UEC, the latter sends a coded signal to the electric steering column lock via the multiplex network.

If the coded signal received by the electric lock is identical to the one stored in its memory, the latter unlocks the steering column and sends a confirmation signal to the UEC.

When this signal is received, the UEC closes the "+" target after the ignition switch and switches off the red warning lamp of the engine start immobilizer system.

When the ignition is switched on, the UEC and the injection ECU exchange coded signals via the multiplex network.

If the signals sent by the UCH and the injection ECU are in agreement, the UCH authorises the engine to start and the injection system is unlocked.

Special cases

If the memory of the injection ECU or the electric steering column lock does not contain any reference code, the transmitted code is written to 8 memory.

If the code in the UCH and the code on the Renault card do not match, the system remains locked. The red warning light flashes (quickly). The engine is not allowed to start and the electric steering column lock remains locked.

If the indicator light is constantly on, but there is no "+" after the ignition switch, this indicates a malfunction of the electric steering column lock.

If the indicator light is constantly on, and the "+" after the ignition switch is present, this indicates a malfunction of the injection system.

Caution! If the battery is not sufficiently charged, a voltage drop during starter operation may reactivate the engine starter immobilizer. If the battery voltage is too low, the engine cannot be started even by pushing the vehicle.
