Checking and replacing spark plugs (60,000 km) (Renault Symbol 2)

Prepare your work area and all necessary tools and materials:

• spark plug wrench;
• set of new spark plugs;
• spark plug gap feeler gauge set;
• clean rags.

Stop the engine and let it cool down to ambient temperature. Check the condition of the new spark plugs and their interelectrode gap (Figure 2.33). The gap can only be adjusted by bending the base of the side electrode. Check the condition of the porcelain insulator for cracks.

It is recommended to replace spark plugs one by one.

Blow out the spark plug wells with compressed air (you can use a regular bicycle pump). Disconnect the ignition coils from the spark plugs. Remove the spark plug with a special spark plug wrench, turning the wrench counterclockwise. Compare the condition of the removed spark plug with standard options for assessing the condition of the engine:

• the grey colour of the electrodes and the insulator of medium density indicates normal operation of the spark plugs and the fuel-air mixture preparation system;
• the black color of the electrodes and insulator indicates that the mixture is too rich;
• light grey colour of the electrodes and insulator indicates that the mixture is too lean;
• oiling of the electrodes and insulator indicates that the spark plugs are working intermittently, or that the engine piston rings are wearing out excessively.

Check the spark plug insulator for traces of leakage currents, which are visible as thin random traces on the surface of the insulator. The reason for their appearance is poor contact in the spark plug connector. Replace such a contact connector.



Apply a thin layer of non-stick paste to the threads of the new spark plugs.

Install the spark plug into the cylinder head holes and tighten it by hand until it stops.

Using a spark plug wrench and a torque wrench, tighten the spark plug to 25 Nm.

Replace the remaining spark plugs as described above.

Note: When operating the vehicle in conditions of high air dustiness, replace the replaceable element more often.
