- place the car on a ramp or lift;
- cool the engine to ambient temperature;
- check the components of the system: pipes, suspension elements, clamps, supports, mufflers, catalytic converter;
- check for signs of exhaust leakage by looking for soot marks on the metal;
- check the reliability of the fastening of the brackets and clamps;
- check the suspension system components, especially the rubber components. The exhaust system components should not come into contact with the body components, but only through the rubber suspensions. If you detect contact with any exhaust system component, especially the catalytic converter, loosen its fastening components – the components will fall into place, and then tighten their fastening again;
- check the condition of the underbody for holes, corrosion, loose seams and other defects that could allow exhaust gases to leak into the car's interior. Seal any leaks with sealant;
- inspect the inside of the exhaust pipe. Blackness and soot indicate improper fuel combustion.
