All work on the airbag units and belt pretensioner must be performed by qualified personnel with sufficient experience. When working under the vehicle, do not strike the vehicle components without first locking the passive restraint system control unit with a diagnostic tester. Do not place heat sources near the airbag unit or pretensioner to avoid spontaneous detonation of the unit. When replacing the windshield or front panel, attach labels to them indicating the time of installation of the airbag unit.

The airbag system includes airbag units with gas generators, a control unit with a built-in impact sensor and a warning light indicator in the instrument cluster.

The airbag unit mounted in the center of the steering wheel has the word "AIRBAG" stamped on it. If a passenger airbag is installed, this wording is stamped on the airbag unit mounted on the dashboard in front of the passenger.

When the ignition is switched on, the control unit performs a test that lasts about 3 seconds, during which the control lamp lights up in the instrument cluster. After the test is complete, the control lamp should go out. If the lamp does not light up, lights up later, or lights up while the car is moving, then there is a malfunction in the system. In this case, you should immediately contact a car service specialist.

The system is triggered by a frontal impact of a certain force, depending on the direction of the impact. In a few milliseconds, the airbag inflates, forming a safety bubble between the driver and the steering wheel, as well as between the passenger (if installed) and the instrument panel. This significantly reduces the risk of injury to the driver and passenger. The airbag deflates almost instantly. The control unit also triggers the seat belt pretensioners at the same time as the airbags (see section "Body").

To prevent injury in the event of an unauthorized deployment of the airbag, disconnect the battery and wait at least 5 minutes before removing the airbag module. This will allow the capacitors in the control unit to discharge. When you have finished working, make sure no one is in the passenger compartment when connecting the battery, open the door and turn on the ignition from outside the vehicle.

Do not allow solvents or cleaning fluids to come into contact with the airbag module. It can only be cleaned with a soft cloth.

The airbag module is impact sensitive. Replace the module if it has been dropped or impacted.

Before working near system components or the steering wheel, to prevent injury from unauthorized deployment of the system, remove the air bag module as described below.

Do not attempt to test the system with any devices other than those specifically provided by Renault. The use of conventional testers or ohmmeters may cause the system to operate.

Before starting welding, disconnect the wiring connector from the system control unit. Do not expose the removed module to heat. Keep it away from people.

When replacing the airbag module, the electronic control unit of the system must also be replaced.
