It is more convenient to remove the empty tank while working on a lift, overpass or inspection pit. To remove the remaining fuel, remove the fuel pump module (see "Replacing the fuel pump") and pump out the fuel through the opened hole in the tank.
You will need: 10 mm keys, TORX T25, 13 mm socket head, flat-blade screwdriver.
1. Reduce the pressure in the fuel system (see "Lower pressure in the fuel system").
2. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.
3. Disconnect the fuel lines and wiring harness connector from the fuel pump (see "Replacing the fuel pump").
4. Remove the two bolts securing the filler pipe.
5. Loosen the nut securing the fuel tank ground wire.
6. Press down on the filler pipe and move it down a little.
7. Remove the parking brake cable from the two holders located on the fuel tank...
8. ...and one located on the bottom of the car.
9. Disconnect the fuel filter clamp from the fuel tank.
10. Carefully move the fuel filter to the side.
11. Squeeze the clamps...
12. ...and disconnect the adsorber line.
13. Unscrew the retainer...
14. ...and remove the heat shield mounting pin.
15. Remove two more pistons in the same way...
16. ...and remove the heat shield.
17. Loosen the nuts securing the inlet pipe to the exhaust manifold (see "Replacing elements of the exhaust system").
18. Unscrew the nut and bolt securing the fuel tank on the left side.
19. Similarly, unscrew the bolt and nut on the right side.
20. Remove the exhaust system mounts, turn it...
21. ...and tie it to an additional support, for example, to a hydraulic stand.
Note: If any components in the exhaust system have already been replaced, then only the additional muffler section can be removed, and not the entire system.
22. Locate the parking brake cable behind the fuel tank...
23. ...and remove the tank.
Note: Remove the fuel tank with an assistant, as the tank is quite heavy and has an awkward shape to hold.
24. Install the fuel tank in the reverse order of removal.
25. Fill the tank with fuel, start the engine and check the tightness of all fuel line connections.
