The Renault 19 airbag has a control device (2) provided with energy independent of the onboard battery network (3). If this battery is dead, the electricity comes from another battery (additional battery), the power of which is enough for up to 5 weeks. Batteries should be replaced every 4 years. If the batteries, due to an accident, lose contact with the control device, then the capacitor located in the control device circuit will ensure the operation of the system. If the indicator lamp is on (5), the airbag system should be checked by a workshop immediately. For this, the control igniter mentioned in the text is used (1).
Numeric «4» a gas generator with an ignition system in the steering wheel is indicated, in the place for the airbag.
1. Remove a decorative overlay of a steering wheel.
2. Set the steering wheel to a position where it is locked and unscrew the steering nut (SW 21).
3. Unlock the steering wheel and set it to a straight position. In this case, the spokes of the steering wheel must be arranged symmetrically.
4. Loosen the nuts.
5. Remove the wheel by pulling it towards you.
6. When installing the steering wheel, pay attention to the symmetry of the arrangement of its spokes.
7. Set the steering wheel to a fixed position and tighten the nut to a torque of 40 N.m.
Steering wheel with airbag
It is recommended to remove the steering wheel with an airbag on your own only by an experienced motorist. In this case, a number of safety rules must be observed. Those who are not sure of their competence should contact a car repair shop.
The airbag gas generator is subject to the provisions of the Explosives Act.
They may only be handled by specialists who have been trained in the necessary safety regulations. The most important of all precautions are the following:
1. When working with an airbag, it is necessary to disconnect the negative wire from the battery terminal.
2. Do not work in places with high temperatures (e.g. near an open fire).
3. Do not attach the airbag with the steering wheel removed.
4. Never leave the airbag unattended during work breaks.
5. Do not test for electrical current with an ohmmeter or other electrical measuring instrument.
6. Disconnect independent battery (small 4-pin connector).
7. When carrying out welding work, remove the airbag.
8. When installing an airbag, before connecting the pin connector to the airbag system, check the condition of the system with a pilot igniter (XR BAG Ele. 1288).
9. After an accident, replace all elements of the system.
10. Dispose of the machine according to the instructions!
Removing
1. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery terminal.
2. Disconnect the airbag system from the steering wheel rear left and right (unscrew one T 30 screw each).
3. Raise the airbag and disconnect the pin block. To avoid flashing the control lamp and at the same time discharging the battery, a control igniter is connected in the car repair shop for the duration of the removal (XR BAG Ele.1288).
4. Remove the steering wheel as described for vehicles without an airbag.
5. If the airbag has ever been removed outside of a Renault workshop and installed without a pilot igniter, the airbag's function and installation must be checked by a workshop.
