The Renault 19 airbag control unit (2) is supplied with energy independent of the on-board battery network (3). If this battery is dead, electricity comes from another battery (additional battery), which is sufficient for up to 5 weeks. The batteries must be replaced every 4 years. If the batteries lose contact with the control unit due to an accident, a capacitor located in the control unit circuit will ensure that the system operates. If the indicator lamp (5) lights up, the airbag system must be checked immediately at a car repair shop. The test igniter (1) mentioned in the text above is used for this purpose.
The number "4" indicates the gas generator with the ignition system in the steering wheel, in place of the airbag.
1. Remove the steering wheel trim.
2. Set the steering wheel to the position where it is fixed and unscrew the steering nut (SW 21).
3. Unlock the steering wheel and set it to the straight position. The spokes of the steering wheel should be symmetrical.
4. Unscrew the nuts.
5. Remove the wheel by pulling it towards you.
6. When installing the steering wheel, pay attention to the symmetry of the arrangement of its spokes.
7. Set the steering wheel to a fixed position and tighten the nut to a torque of 40 Nm.
Steering wheel with airbag
It is recommended that only an experienced car enthusiast remove the steering wheel with an airbag on their own. In doing so, it is necessary to follow a number of safety regulations. Anyone who is not confident in their competence should contact a car repair shop.
The airbag gas generator is subject to the regulations of the explosives law.
Handling them is permitted only to specialists who have been trained in the necessary safety precautions. The most important of all safety precautions are the following:
1. When working with an airbag, it is necessary to disconnect the negative wire from the battery terminal.
2. Do not carry out work in places with high temperatures (for example, near an open fire).
3. Do not attach the air bag when the steering wheel is removed.
4. Never leave the airbag unattended during breaks in operation.

5. Do not test for electrical current using an ohmmeter or other electrical measuring device.
6. Disconnect the independent battery (small 4-pin connector).
7. When carrying out welding work, remove the airbag.
8. When installing the airbag, before connecting the pin connector to the airbag system, check the system condition using a test igniter (XR BAG Ele. 1288).
9. After an accident, replace all system components.
10. Dispose of the machine according to the instructions!
Removal
1. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery terminal.
2. Disconnect the airbag system from the steering wheel on the rear left and right (unscrew one T 30 bolt at a time).
3. Raise the airbag and disconnect the pin connector. To avoid the indicator lamp flashing and the battery draining, the workshop connects a test igniter during the removal process (XR BAG Ele.1288).
4. Remove the steering wheel as described for vehicles without an airbag.
5. If the airbag has ever been removed outside a Renault workshop and has been installed without the test igniter, the airbag and its installation must be checked at a service station.
