The Renault 19 uses rack and pinion steering, on which the gear wheel (small steering gear), mounted on the end of the composite steering shaft, engages the rack and moves it depending on the direction of rotation of the steering wheel. A small steering gear with a bearing is held in a certain position by a screw plug screwed into the steering mechanism housing. As a result, the spring-loaded cracker (creeper) presses the small steering gear with the appropriate force against the rack. Adjustment is carried out by precisely measured tightening of the screw plug.
Power steering
On Renault 19, at the request of the client, and on some modifications, a power steering mechanism is installed as standard. The servo makes it much easier to turn the steering wheel.
The toothed rack in the power steering drive also functions as pistons for pressurized oil. Oil is pumped by a vane pump, which, on vehicles with a gasoline engine, is driven by a V-belt from the engine. The rotation of the steering wheel is transmitted to the valve control unit, which regulates the direction and amount of oil pumped. Excess oil is discharged into a tank, which is located on the right side in the engine compartment and is connected by a hose to the oil pump.
